Job Description
Network Systems Engineer – Tactical Communications
Location: Remote / Mission-Based / Travel: with up to 50% travel and onsite support requirements based on mission and operational needs.
Clearance: Eligible for U.S. Security Clearance Required
Help Build the Future of Tactical Connectivity
Indigo Industries is seeking a mission-driven Network Systems Engineer to help architect and deploy next-generation communications systems supporting tactical and autonomous operations in complex, contested environments. This role sits at the intersection of advanced networking, unmanned systems, and defense innovation—supporting resilient connectivity where it matters most.
You’ll work hands-on with cutting-edge technologies including SATCOM, LTE/5G, tactical radios, autonomous platforms, and secure IP networking to enable mission success in disconnected, intermittent, and limited-bandwidth (DIL) environments. From field demonstrations to operational deployments, you’ll help deliver secure, scalable communications capabilities for real-world defense applications.
If you thrive in fast-paced technical environments, enjoy solving difficult networking challenges, and want to directly impact national security missions, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
Design & Build Mission-Critical Networks
• Architect and maintain secure, scalable IP-based networks across enterprise, mobile, and tactical environments
• Design resilient network topologies optimized for contested and DIL operations
• Evaluate and integrate emerging networking technologies to improve operational effectiveness
Deploy & Operate Advanced Communications Systems
• Configure and deploy routers, switches, firewalls, and multi-transport communication systems
• Support LTE, 5G, SATCOM, WAN/LAN, and tactical radio integration
• Execute communications planning for field exercises, demonstrations, and mission events
Optimize Network Performance & Reliability
• Implement routing protocols including BGP and OSPF
• Develop QoS, failover, and redundancy strategies for high-availability operations
• Troubleshoot and optimize throughput, latency, and network performance in constrained environments
Support Cybersecurity & Resilience
• Integrate secure communications using VPNs, encryption, and firewall technologies
• Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to support Zero Trust Architecture and DoD/NIST compliance requirements
• Participate in adversarial testing and contested network environment simulations
Enable Tactical & Autonomous Systems Integration
• Integrate networking solutions with unmanned and distributed systems
• Prototype and demonstrate network-enabled capabilities in operationally realistic environments
• Ensure interoperability across mission systems and communications infrastructure
Automate & Collaborate
• Assist with network automation using tools such as Python, Bash, and Ansible
• Work closely with engineers, developers, and operators across multidisciplinary teams
• Train users and support mission partners on tools, systems, and best practices
Required Qualifications
• 3+ years of experience in network engineering, tactical communications, or related fields
• Strong knowledge of IP networking, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), VPNs, and secure communications
• Experience configuring WAN/LAN infrastructure, QoS, and policy-based routing
• Proficiency with Linux-based systems and command-line tools
• Ability to operate independently in dynamic, field-based environments
• Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with SDN, SD-WAN, or network orchestration platforms
• Scripting and automation experience (Python, Bash, Ansible, etc.)
• Military communications or defense systems experience
• Familiarity with Zero Trust Architecture and NIST security frameworks
• Experience with Link 16 Tactical Data Link (TDL)
• Background integrating SATCOM, LTE/5G, or tactical radio systems
Why Indigo Industries?
• Work on mission-focused technologies with real operational impact
• Collaborate with a highly technical, fast-moving engineering team
• Gain hands-on experience with advanced tactical communications and autonomous systems
• Support cutting-edge defense capabilities from concept through field deployment
• Opportunity to work in both lab and operational environments
Compensation
Compensation is competitive and based on experience, technical expertise, and work location.
Benefits & Perks
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance
• PTO and all paid federal holidays
• Retirement savings plan with company support
• Opportunity to work on mission-driven, cutting-edge defense technologies
• Collaborative, fast-paced engineering environment with opportunities for growth
