Description

The Altus team supports a high impact program designed to deliver technical expertise in energetics development, manufacturing, and facility modernization in support of national defense programs at Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD). This effort supports engineering, manufacturing, safety, laboratory, and project management activities associated with energetic materials operations and facility modernization initiatives.

In this role as the Chemical Engineer, you will support project execution related to energetic material manufacturing and processing operations. Responsibilities include developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), supporting safety review processes, assisting with manufacturing process engineering, supporting equipment and facility upgrades, and contributing to project engineering activities including planning, reporting, and technical oversight.

This position requires knowledge of manufacturing and processing technologies such as mixing, pressing, machining, and other industrial or energetic material processes, as well as familiarity with engineering documentation, safety processes, and project execution support.

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop, write, demonstrate, route, and obtain safety approval for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to energetic material manufacturing and processing operations.

Support engineering activities related to energetic material manufacturing processes including mixing, pressing, machining, coating, and other processing technologies.

Assist in planning and execution of engineering projects including cost estimates, scheduling, and project planning support.

Provide technical oversight during project execution to ensure engineering, safety, and quality requirements are met.

Support safety reviews, hazard analyses, and safety documentation related to energetic material operations and manufacturing processes.

Support laboratory testing, process testing, and evaluation of energetic materials and manufacturing processes.

Assist with engineering analysis for equipment upgrades, repairs, facility renovations, modernization efforts, and manufacturing process improvements.

Support integration of SMART manufacturing technologies, including data acquisition systems, equipment monitoring systems, and process data tools.

Assist with facility layout reviews, process flow improvements, and equipment installation planning.

Ensure quality requirements, documentation, and engineering standards are maintained throughout project execution.

Troubleshoot manufacturing, process, or equipment issues and contribute to development of engineering solutions.

Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and project status inputs in support of program reporting requirements.

Communicate technical information and project results both orally and in writing to project managers, engineers, scientists, and government personnel.

Support program and project management activities including project plans, monthly status reports, and technical documentation deliverables.

Qualifications:

Required:

Active U.S. DoD SECRET Security Clearance (Must have interim clearance before start date)

Bachelor’s degree in in any relevant scientific field.

Minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing, process engineering, chemical processing, or industrial engineering environments.

Experience developing or working with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, or technical procedures.

Knowledge of manufacturing or processing technologies such as mixing, pressing, machining, coating, or similar industrial processes.

Understanding of engineering safety processes, hazard analysis, or safety review procedures.

Strong technical writing, problem solving, and communication skills.

Ability to work in laboratory, pilot plant, manufacturing, or industrial environments.

Must be able to obtain and maintain NSWC Indian Head Qualification Certifications, including completion of a DOT medical exam is required for qualification.

Preferred:

Experience with energetic materials manufacturing, explosives processing, propellants, or ordnance manufacturing.

Experience supporting government or Department of Defense engineering programs.

Experience with safety documentation such as hazard analyses, process hazard analysis, job hazard analysis, or safety review boards.

Experience with manufacturing equipment, controls systems, hydraulics, or industrial processing equipment.

Familiarity with SMART manufacturing technologies, data acquisition systems, or manufacturing data systems.

Experience supporting project engineering, cost estimates, scheduling, or project planning activities
