Position Summary
The Asbestos Worker 1 performs asbestos inspections and assists asbestos abatement personnel in environmental hazard remediation in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The position includes progressive career development steps with opportunities for classification advancement through training hours in parallel with an educational requirement.
This position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship while performing hazardous material removal and containment activities.

4+ Years Experience either an Illinois Architectural License; or an Illinois Professional Engineer License; or an Illinois Structural Engineer License, or Industrial Hygienists license, or Industrial Hygienist Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or completion of a Bachelor's Degree or higher in architecture, engineering, mathematics or science; and meet the experience requirements of a licensed inspector; or completion of a Bachelor's Degree and written verification of 2,080 hours of experience in asbestos inspections, project management, project design or other asbestos management and control activities.

Position Summary
The Asbestos Worker 1 performs asbestos inspections and assists asbestos abatement personnel in environmental hazard remediation in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship while performing hazardous material removal and containment activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities - Asbestos identification and abatement assistance
- Identify and record hazardous materials.
- Remove asbestos from pipes, tanks, hangars, and other fixtures
- Fiberglass insulation installation and repair on pipe valves and various-shaped tanks
- Take air samples in conjunction with asbestos removal
- Construct containment areas including negative air pressure enclosures and decontamination units.
- Safely operate HEPA filtration systems, vacuums, and abatement tools.
- Package and dispose of hazardous materials according to EPA and OSHA standards.
- Maintain detailed documentation of abatement activities and regulatory compliance.
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, EPA, and state asbestos abatement regulations.
- Properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), respirators, and decontamination procedures.
- Conduct daily safety inspections and hazard assessments.
- Assist in air monitoring and clearance procedures.
Environmental Support
- Assist with remediation of mold, lead-based paint, and other environmental hazards.
- Participate in environmental monitoring and documentation.
- Maintain inventory of safety and abatement equipment.
- Receives a minimum of 8 hours OSHA approved training annually
Career Progression
- Leve I - Asbestos Worker/Inspector-
- Experience: 0-2 years or 0-1040 hours
- Responsibilities: Assist with containment setup and abatement work, follow supervisor direction on hazardous material removal, complete required safety and asbestos worker training.
- Certifications: Asbestos Worker License preferred, OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred, respirator fit testing.
Asbestos Abatement

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to obtain a bachelor's degree within 2 years of hire date.
- Ability to obtain Illinois State Asbestos Worker License within 90 days
- Valid driver's license
- Knowledge of hazardous material handling and safety procedures
- Strong attention to detail and documentation
Physical Requirements
- Ability to wear full PPE including respirators for extended periods
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Work in confined spaces and construction environments
- Perform repetitive physical tasks
