Solutions Architect(Senior Consultant, Engineering & Technical Services)

Fearless is seeking a part-time Solutions Architect to provide strategic technical leadership supporting a large-scale federal learning management and workforce training platform. This role is responsible for ensuring that system architecture, integrations, and infrastructure decisions support long-term scalability, security, and performance in a regulated federal environment.

The Solutions Architect operates as a senior technical advisor, guiding architectural direction while enabling delivery teams to execute effectively. This role focuses on designing and validating system-level solutions, ensuring interoperability across components, and aligning platform evolution with mission needs. This is a fractional role intended for a highly experienced architect who can provide targeted, high-value input at key decision points without being involved in day-to-day development activities.

At Fearless , this Senior Consultant collaborates with cross functional teams to align the technical vision, implementation, and quality of software systems across development, reliability, testing, and operations. This role will possess the skills to be able to bridge business objectives with technical execution in software development, infrastructure, security, and testing at an advanced application level of proficiency. The Sr. Consultant role will work on projects that allow them to ensure scalable, secure, and reliable solutions while mentoring engineers, fostering collaboration, and aligning stakeholders with product and project goals.

Your Responsibilities in this Role:
  • Define and maintain the overall system architecture for a cloud-hosted Learning Management System (LMS) and associated training platforms.
  • Provide architectural guidance for application design, system integrations, and data flows across platform components and external systems.
  • Ensure alignment of system architecture with federal security requirements, including secure design principles and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Advise on cloud architecture (AWS or similar), including scalability, reliability, and performance optimization strategies.
  • Review and validate technical designs to ensure consistency with architectural standards and long-term maintainability.
  • Support DevSecOps implementation by guiding architecture decisions related to CI/CD pipelines, environment management, and system deployment strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Tech Lead, DevOps engineers, and development teams to resolve complex technical challenges and ensure cohesive system design.
  • Identify risks related to system performance, scalability, and integration, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Support transition activities by assessing existing system architecture, identifying gaps, and recommending improvements.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, integration patterns, and system design standards.
  • Provide input into technology selection, modernization strategies, and long-term platform evolution.
  • Design and maintain 3-tier architecture supporting ASP.NET (VB.NET) web application with SQL Server 2017 backend, Windows 2012 R2/IIS 8.5/.Net 4.72 web servers, and RHEL 7/Nginx proxy servers.
  • Design and document a 3-zone architecture supporting development, test/staging, and production environments with appropriate data synchronization protocols
  • Define an approach for integrating their-party tools (CloudBerry Drive, EVO PDF, ClamAV, TX Text Control, and related systems) into the application architecture.
  • Support migration from the current HCQIS/AWS-hosted EC2 environment to the CMS-owned AWS enclave and CMS Hybrid Cloud environment; coordinate migration activities with COR and document the approach and timeline
  • Ensure architecture supports Section 508 compliance for all ICT components; establish standards for Section 508 testing and remediation.
  • Design hosting architecture for training products, including LMS content, SCORM packages, webinars, videos, audio, and other digital learning objects.
  • Maintain Authority to Operate (ATO) and support all CMS security requirements; follow all present and future CMS security policies and industry best practices
  • Provide architecture leadership for archiving management infrastructure, supporting comprehensive backup, version control, and an indexed archive of all source files, course materials, and learner records
  • Support architecture for robust usage reporting methodology and data analytics capabilities, including integration with third-party tools.

Work Experience

PROJECT SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of 12+ years of experience in system architecture, software engineering, or related technical leadership roles.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise-level system architectures in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, data integration patterns, and scalable web application design.
  • Experience working within DevSecOps environments, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and secure deployment practices.
  • Familiarity with federal security requirements and frameworks (e.g., NIST, FISMA, FedRAMP) is highly desirable.
  • Experience supporting or designing Learning Management Systems (LMS) or similar enterprise platforms is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership across multiple teams and guide architectural decision-making.
  • Experience in evaluating and modernizing legacy systems while maintaining operational stability is highly desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex systems and recommend practical, scalable solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance.

The salary range for this position is:

Minimum Salary: $120,588

Salary Midpoint: $156,764

Maximum Salary: $195,955

Hiring Range for Role: $120,588 - $183,000

*This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on individual and company performance criteria.
