We are seeking a Security Engineer to support cybersecurity engineering, assessment and authorization (A&A), and continuous monitoring activities across enterprise technology initiatives within large Federal environments. This role is responsible for implementing and validating security controls, supporting Authority to Operate (ATO) processes, performing vulnerability assessments, and maintaining compliance with federal cybersecurity standards and organizational security policies. The Security Engineer works closely with development, operations, architecture, and governance teams to ensure systems are securely designed, deployed, and maintained throughout the system lifecycle.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop, update, and maintain security documentation and artifacts required to support A&A activities and ATO package preparation.
• Implement, validate, and monitor technical and procedural security controls aligned with federal cybersecurity frameworks.
• Perform vulnerability scanning and assessment activities, analyze results, and coordinate remediation efforts with technical teams.
Create and maintain Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms), tracking remediation status and supporting periodic reporting requirements.
• Support preparation, review, and submission of ATO packages, ensuring documentation completeness, traceability, and compliance.
• Participate in security posture reviews, risk briefings, and compliance assessments with internal and Government stakeholders.
Conduct periodic security audits and continuous monitoring activities to validate ongoing control effectiveness.
• Review system changes, configuration updates, and deployment activities to assess security impacts and control implementation status.
• Identify, document, and communicate security risks, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies aligned with federal cybersecurity standards.
• Collaborate with development, infrastructure, DevSecOps, and configuration management teams to support secure system integration and secure SDLC practices.
• Provide input to cloud security assessments and environment authorization activities where applicable.
• Support incident response efforts by assisting with security investigations, root cause analysis, and documentation of findings.
• Maintain accurate security records, evidence repositories, and compliance tracking artifacts.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of cybersecurity engineering practices, governance processes, and risk management workflows.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
• 5+ years of experience in cybersecurity engineering, information security operations, or A&A support within enterprise environments.
• Strong knowledge of NIST SP 800-53, Risk Management Framework (RMF), FISMA, and federal cybersecurity compliance practices.
• Experience supporting ATO preparation, control validation, continuous monitoring, and POA&M lifecycle management.
• Hands-on experience performing vulnerability scanning, analysis, and remediation coordination.
• Ability to develop and maintain security documentation and control evidence packages.
• Understanding of system security architecture concepts, secure configuration practices, and risk assessment methodologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across technical, operational, and governance stakeholder groups.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
• Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs, is a plus.
• Familiarity with cloud security authorization processes and enterprise cloud environments.
• Experience preparing A&A artifacts such as System Security Plans, Contingency Plans, Incident Response Plans, and Security Assessment Reports.
• Exposure to DevSecOps delivery models, automated security scanning tools, or continuous compliance practices.
• Relevant cybersecurity certifications (e.g., Security+, CISSP, CAP, or equivalent) preferred but not required.
EDUCATION:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
CLEARANCE:
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
