Orion Space Solutions, an Arcfield Company, is seeking a Research Scientist to quickly integrate with existing teams of scientists and engineers on a variety of programs for government and other customers.
This individual will:
- Maintain and upgrade data assimilative models that nowcast and forecast the ionosphere.
- Develop tools to validate the output of space environment models.
- Utilize remotely sensed and in situ observations of the space environment from ground-based and spaceborne platforms.
- Develop techniques to enhance space domain awareness using ionospheric measurements.
- Work with teams of scientists, engineers, and program management to develop software tools intended for eventual transition to operations.
- Be responsible for software and accompanying technical documentation for program deliverables.
- Contribute to reports, proposals, and publications.
- Present work internally, to customers, and at technical conferences.
- Career level with a complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts.
- Working under only general direction, provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
- Plans and coordinates activities concerned with investigating and resolving customers' reports of technical problems with products and services.
- Evaluates new technologies for application in improving design of commercial models and applications. Plans, coordinates, directs, and evaluates testing of space environment models and applications.
- Performs risk assessment of aerospace systems and generates risk mitigation plans and strategies.
Qualifications
Required:
- BS 5-7 Years, MS 3-5, PhD 0-2
- Degree in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or similar field
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance
- Strong background in physics, statistics, and linear algebra
- Strong skills in Python-based development
- Experience with using Linux
- Experience with scientific computing and data science libraries in Python (numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, etc.)
- Familiarity with scientific data formats (netCDF, HDF5, etc.)
- Understanding of software development best practices
- Willingness to learn new concepts in plasma physics, space situational awareness, radio frequency sensing, and beyond
- Understanding of the theory and application of digital signal processing
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Desired:
- PhD. in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or similar field
- Background in data assimilation
- Experience with GNSS remote sensing (radio occultation, reflectometry, etc.)
- Experience with HF sounding of the ionosphere
- Experience in Docker or similar
- Experience in cloud computing
- Familiarity with space mission design
