Job Description

Duties

  • Administers information systems.
  • Serves as project officer for recommending selection of and installing new computer systems and software, and maintaining all computer systems.
  • Administers the computer security program.
  • Provides training and assistance to customers.

  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.

  • This position may be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • May be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.
  • May be required to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required.
  • Serves as alternate security manager for the squadron and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must obtain Information Assurance certification within the required timeframe. Must possess A+ Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Administrative and Management Positions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-08, or equivalent in other pay systems, which includes: installation and maintenance of computer and software systems; diagnosing and resolving problems with telecommunications, Local Area Network, and Wide Area Network systems; and applying a wide range of analytical and diagnostic methods, procedures, and principles to identify system failures and take corrective actions to resume normal operations.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of DoD and Air Force automated data processing and networking standards, policies, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software systems and their interfaces; and higher level programming languages comparable to COBOL, IWIMS, SQL 7.0 and 2000, and other job control languages.
  • Knowledge of data content and output options for a variety of administrative, scientific and/or technical program applications that are processed on any of several multi-program operating systems.
  • Knowledge of facility environment and infrastructure to support computer systems.
  • Knowledge of security concepts, principles, and practices to plan and implement security procedures for physical, personnel, and information security programs within the organization.
  • Knowledge of required security training concepts, programs, procedures and practices to assist managers in complying with established security programs.
  • Ability to use and maintain a computer system, equipment, and software; analyze computer network, software, and hardware problems and develop effective and economical solutions; and train users on new computer systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
