As the Experienced Engineer Aide (Part-Time On-Call) you will join our team in San Diego, CA, where you will manage a broad range of responsibilities including the maintenance of our Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) test assets, operating company vessels, scheduling and overseeing boat maintenance, fabricating custom equipment, and handling lab logistics.
Serco supports UMSS/UMV Lab undersea research, test and evaluation, and engineering events. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent hands-on skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

In this role, you will:
- Maintain and Repair ROV Test Assets.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all ROV systems and associated equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in a timely and efficient manner.
- Conduct pre- and post-dive checks and services on the ROVs prior to and after test evolutions.
- Assist Engineers in Preparing ROVs for Test Events:
- Collaborate with engineers to prepare and configure ROVs for specific testing and operational requirements.
- Support engineers in the execution of test procedures.
- Fabricate and Build Test Equipment:
- Fabricate, assemble, and build mechanical and electrical equipment used in test events based on engineering designs and specifications.
- Operate workshop machinery and tools to create custom components as required.
- Vessel Operations and Maintenance:
- Serve as a vessel operator (coxswain) during test events and other marine operations.
- Coordinate and schedule all routine and emergency maintenance for the lab's vessels.
- Maintain detailed service records and ensure all vessels are in a constant state of readiness and compliance.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
- Logistics and Inventory Management:
- Manage shipping and receiving equipment, parts, and supplies.
- Maintain a detailed inventory of all parts, spare components, and raw materials.
- Order and procure supplies, tools, and materials needed for fabrication and maintenance.
- Maintain the lab's transportation carts, ensuring they are safe and in good working order.
- Ensure all operations are conducted in compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized workshop and work area.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active or current DoD Secret clearance.
- US Citizenship.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- 5 years of experience.
- Current or previous coxswain qualification.
- Proficiency in Microsoft skills especially in Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work both in a team environment and independently, and often under short, multiple deadlines.
- Proven experience in a similar role, preferably with hands-on experience with ROVs or other marine systems.
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
- Experience with hydraulic and electrical systems.
- Experience with logistics tasks such as shipping, receiving, and inventory management is preferred.
- Strong technical background, excellent hands-on skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to work in various conditions, including a workshop and marine environments (on vessels at sea).
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends to support test events.
- Ability to lift and push up to 50lbs and work in various positions in a dynamic marine environment.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

- An active or current DoD Secret clearance
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
