This Software Engineer position will be on a dynamic team responsible for engineering support, maintenance management and life cycle support of autonomous underwater vehicles for our customer in the Newport, Rhode Island area. Serco supports the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), including support for the design, acquisition, testing and sustainment of naval undersea warfare systems. You will be leading a team that works closely with the customer to deliver management, engineering, acquisition, and logistics support required to conduct system upgrades, maintenance, and sustainment in support of autonomous underwater vehicles. Serco has been supporting the Naval Sea Systems Command for over 50 years and has been recognized by the Navy for their outstanding contributions.

This position is contignent upon the ability to maintain/transfer a DoD Secret Security Clearance

In this role, you will:
  • Contribute to the design, development, and testing of advanced unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) systems for critical military programs. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver reliable, high-performance software solutions that directly support mission success.
  • Design, develop, and maintain software applications for UUV systems.
  • Program in C, C++, Python, MATLAB, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and related tools within both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Use Visual Studio and other IDEs to support development and integration efforts.
  • Participate in UUV sea testing and evaluation (T&E) with up to 10% travel (domestic and international).
  • Collaborate with engineers across disciplines to integrate software with electrical, mechanical, and sensor systems.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including software development plans, updates, test plans, and test descriptions.
  • Apply strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and refine system performance.
  • Test equipment, solve operating problems, and estimate the time and cost of engineering projects.
  • Collect technical data from appropriate documentation (e.g., technical manuals and internal and external reports), automated files, and other staff.
  • Determine and interpret equipment characteristics data, performs necessary analysis, and transcribes to required formats.
  • Assist staff in moderately technical aspects of project work.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of customer databases and of the types of information stored in each file.
  • Assist in the training of less experienced staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of appropriate technical documentation.
  • As required, verbally present information at project review sessions and in informal interface with customers.
  • Comply with security procedures in the performance of duties.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 2 years of professional software/electrical design experience.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, Python, MATLAB, and experience in both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Machine learning capabilities utilizing tools such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Hands-on experience with Visual Studio or similar IDEs.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude.
  • The ability to travel up to 10%.
