The IT Technical Writer will develop, edit, and maintain documentation that supports IT processes, systems, and operations. The role will collaborate with users and technical stakeholders to gather and validate information, standardize content, and ensure compliance with documentation standards. The writer will analyze processes, identify gaps, and produce clear materials such as procedures, work instructions, knowledge articles, and technical publications. The position requires onsite presence at the organization's Washington, DC headquarters.
Due to federal security clearance requirements, applicant must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident with an active Public Trust clearance. This is a contract to hire opportunity. Applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis and convert to FTE following contract duration. Responsibilities:
- Research, write, and edit documentation for IT processes, systems, and operations.
- Produce procedures, work instructions, knowledge articles, reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instructional content, catalogs, and technical publications.
- Gather technical data through independent research, observation, collaboration with technical staff, and review of existing materials.
- Interface with users, subject matter experts, analysts, and programmers to understand technologies, standards, and business requirements.
- Revise and standardize documentation to align with established formats and quality standards.
- Recommend improvements to documentation scope, format, and content.
- Perform final quality assurance reviews on all deliverables.
- Edit and standardize content prepared by other writers as needed.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 6 years writing and editing professional documentation.
- At least 2 years supporting Cyber IT operations or producing IT-related documentation.
- 1 to 2 years creating or editing IT project lifecycle or IT Service Management documentation supporting engineering, operations, support, or program management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Visio for creating and editing workflow diagrams.
- Ability to facilitate discussions related to IT Service Management, project lifecycles, and business processes with technical teams and customers.
- Ability to identify documentation gaps, process bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Familiarity with ITIL Foundations v3 or v4 (preferred).
- Familiarity with Waterfall and Agile project lifecycle methodologies (preferred).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships.
- Proven capability to analyze organizational processes and document ITSM and technical operations procedures.
- Detail orientation with strong quality assurance and review capabilities.
- Experience documenting and quality-checking operational procedures, knowledge articles, and client deliverables while meeting deadlines.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, or a related discipline.
- With a Master's degree, one year of specialized experience may substitute.
- With 9 or more years of specialized experience, no degree is required.
- ITIL Foundations certification (preferred).
- Must be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder, have resided in the U.S. for at least 3 years, and be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
