Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess the following Basic Requirements:Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

Incumbent may be required to support a 24/7 watch bill as scheduled or as high operational demands dictate (surge manning). Notification of hours may be short fused and require compensation at a later date. The employee may be required to work regularly scheduled overtime as part of their work schedule or on an emergency basis.
- You will monitor weather patterns and issues aviation and marine weather forecasts for authorized customers for forecast periods.
- You will determine approaches and methodology for using ensemble guidance, weather pattern analogs, cycles and oscillations, tele-connections, synoptic persistence and systems development either separately or in combination.
- You will conduct research, case studies, and coordinate with other scientists to improve both short-range forecasts and long-range forecasts.
- You will stand watch as an OTSR ship officer and use optimum route planning tools for ocean voyage transits by choosing the least-time route that avoids meteorological and sea state hazards.
- You will screen subordinates locally produced forecasts, prognostic charts, and warnings during normal working hours.
- You will analyze oceanographic data for verification of forecasts and issue Fleet Weather Center's High Wind and/or Sea Warnings.
- You will provide briefings and advice to a variety of personnel on all aspects of the sciences of meteorology and oceanography that may impact major fleet exercises and operations.
- You will help identify training shortfalls and plan courses of action to address these shortfalls.
- You will provide instruction to civilian personnel, military junior officers and enlisted personnel in maritime weather, aviation weather, tropical cyclone forecasting and ocean wave forecasting.
