Responsibilities
- Provide independent and coordinated technical, administrative, and practical (hands-on) support of day-to-day operations of a medical research laboratory performing injury orthopaedic and biomechanics research with PMHS whole bodies and body segments based on broad guidance, regulatory guidance, research objectives , SOPs, and individual initiative .
- E nsure day-to-day operations, including, but not limited to, PMHS chain of custody and handling, documentation, cold storage management, test equipment/instrumentation setup, data collection, data and file management, and post-test cleanup related to PMHS.
- Work independently documenting and maintaining database of chain of custody, inventory, labeling, photo-documentation, use, transfer, and storage of PMHS.
- Support cadaver acquisition, including review for and recommendation on acceptance of potential cadaveric specimens, coordination of shipments, storage, and imaging, conducting and recreating medical imaging.
- Work independently to complete administrative functions for cold storage management in accordance with IBPG Biosafety Manual for Use of Cadavers . Maintain proper storage conditions (temperature and security) for cadaveric specimens .
- Support research planning and execution, particularly of cadaveric projects from planning stages to execution to post event activities, including, but not limited to, autopsy, facility clean-up, scheduling and disposal of regulated medical waste, and return of cadaveric specimens.
- Documents and implements preparation, prepares SOPs and trains study team members against SOPs, completes safety assessments and supports inspections to maintain BSL-2, and records summary observations for PIs and AIs as part of preparing and executing experiments or other efforts.
- Maintain individual, study team, and Injury Biomechanics facilities compliance with established laboratory safety and other required regulatory procedures, including but not limited to successful completion of specific training and implementation of SOPs for biosafety compliance, cadaveric specimen use and handling, biohazard work, and regulated medical waste.
- Develop, maintain , execute, and update operating procedures and policies that adhere to DOD/Army/Federal/State regulatory requirements Maintain and write all USAARL Injury Biomechanics documentation (such as the IBPG Biosafety Manual for Use of Cadavers and associated policies).
- Maintain, conduct, and coordinate all relevant and required training for the conduct of cadaveric injury research.
- Ensure the USAARL Injury Biomechanics Cadaver Program and work spaces meet the requirements of all DOD/Army/Federal/State regulatory and appropriate BSL-2 regulations .
- Maintain the capabilities and facilities used for cadavers for non-cadaveric RDT&E; support these non-cadaveric studies, particularly those performing matched pair evaluations with a range of Anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) in these same facilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain and active Secret security clearance.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a state-issued driver's license for independent travel to meetings and field-data collection locations.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of advanced and commonly-used concepts, practices, standards, and procedures within human anatomy, physiology, dissection, cadaveric research, biomechanics research, and mathematics through a degree and coursework in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field from an accredited program as well as through relevant certifications, training, and licenses.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding and familiarity with instrumentation (ie. Accelerometers, strain gauges, angular rate sensors, etc.
- Higher level education to include a PhD
- Ability to lead a team of junior professionals
- Familiarity in a Lab environment
- Experience in writing and editing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- The use of strong communication skills and professionalism at all times.
- Ability to apply for and maintain Associate or Principal Investigator credentials.
- Ability to travel to industry conferences
- Consistently work onsite and support a team of military personnel, government civilian personnel, and other contractor personnel in the lab and office.
- Ability to work independently and as a leader or follower
