Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is seeking a full-time Human Factors Design Engineer on the Human Systems Engineering team. In this role, the engineer will coordinate with design, simulation, laboratory, and government groups to integrate human-factors considerations throughout a product development cycle. The engineer will conduct and supervise human-factors assessments and also support human performance enhancement and human-machine teaming development projects.
In addition, the candidate will apply human-factors, biomedical, and systems-engineering principles-grounded in human performance, psychology, physiology, biometrics, and neurocognitive science-to design, develop, and test aircraft systems, equipment, and procedures that minimize health risks while sustaining optimal crew performance.
The engineer will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of aeromedical specialists, human-factors experts, systems engineers, data analysts, and psychologists to explore the complex interactions among humans, machines, and the aviation environment. This collaboration is integral to developing human-centered design solutions that improve aircraft architecture, crew stations, and pilot protective equipment, with a strong emphasis on usability, safety, and operational efficiency.
Finally, the candidate will maintain a high-level understanding of fighter cockpits-including the F-35, F-22, F-16, and emerging ADP platforms-to identify mission-system capability gaps and inform realistic combat-environment concepts.
Must be a US Citizen; this position will require a government security clearance. This position is located at a facility that requires special access.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Human Factors or a related discipline; equivalent experience or combined education is acceptable.
• Experience in Pilot-Vehicle Interface (PVI), Human-Machine Interface (HMI), or Human Factors Engineering (HFE) with an aviation focus.
• Applied knowledge of human-factors principles within aerospace environments.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally on occasion.
• Eligibility to obtain a DoD Top-Secret clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Desired Skills:
• Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Human Factors, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field with coursework in aviation human factors and/or safety.
• Hands-on experience designing, developing, and testing systems, equipment, and procedures for crew-system applications.
• Understanding of biomedical-engineering concepts and aerospace-medicine practices as they relate to aerospace operations.
• Experience with human-centered design methodologies and tools (e.g., UX design, HCI).
• Knowledge of biomedical and human-factors analysis methods such as usability testing, workload assessment, biometric analysis, and human-error analysis.
• Familiarity with aircraft design and protective-equipment development, emphasizing biomedical and human-factors considerations.
• Proficient in data-analytics techniques and programming languages (Python, MATLAB, C++).
• Demonstrated expertise in aviation and technology development/testing.
• Experience designing and evaluating crew systems.
• Applied knowledge of HFE evaluation tools (Bedford Workload, China Lake Situation Awareness, USAF Flight Test Center, Modified Cooper-Harper scales) for aviation-design assessments.
• Proven project-leadership abilities, quick learning of new disciplines, and ability to build professional networks.
• Confident presenter with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
