HEALTH PHYSICIST

Duties

• You will assist in planning, directing, evaluating and writing procedures to accomplish the personnel exposure control program at the shipyard and satellite locations.
• You will compile data and prepare reports to include comprehensive analysis of data conclusions regarding the radiological status of the environment.
• You will investigate, resolve, document and review dosimetry occurrences.
• You will perform analysis and evaluation for fleet dosimetry investigation and problems.
• You will complete mathematical modeling for internal and external dose assessments.
• You will present guidance and expertise on dosimetry placement for work evolutions involving high exposure to radiological engineering personnel.
• You will develop, design, implement and maintain complex dosimetry processing instruments, associated software and procedures for various types of routine and un unusual occurrences.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• You will be required to lift/carry up to 60 pounds in weight.

Qualifications

GS-07
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience applying the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and/or applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines.
• Experience applying the fundamentals of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Control Office, and Radiation Health Division.
• Experience applying the principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems.
• Experience applying the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls, including associated disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.

GS-05
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience demonstrating the knowledge of the functions and objectives of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Control Office, and Radiation Health Division.
• Experience demonstrating the knowledge of the operating principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems.
• Experience applying the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls, including associated disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

or

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
