Job Description

We have an opening for a Laborer I/Hammermill Operator. You will be responsible for functions and support related to the safe and efficient operation of the Laboratory's Hammermill facility, including the operation of heavy equipment used to destroy both classified and unclassified material. You will deliver transport devices to customers and retrieve them when full, delivering them to the destruction area according to strict security measures. You will access areas that may include offices, industrial facilities, scientific and research laboratories, and emergency services facilities. This position is in the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department within the Infrastructure and Operations Directorate. This position may require work at Site 300 located in Tracy, California.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will
  • Coordinate delivery and pick-up of classified and unclassified material destruction bags from all facilities, scheduling with the designated area contacts as well as work with managers and security to update and provide policies and procedures to customers.
  • Interact with other craft personnel, facility management, administrative personnel, and Classified Administrative Specialists as well as key security contacts ensuring all policies and procedures remain adhered to as they are updated.
  • Monitor and remove paper material from designated bins in limited areas.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used for destruction as well as the vehicle used for transporting materials.
  • Perform manual labor in the clean-up, maintenance, repair and construction of streets and grounds surrounding buildings and research structures.
  • Perform skilled laborer duties such as cement finishing, operating trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, backhoes loaders, and other equipment used for hauling, excavating, and road maintenance.
  • Operate heavy equipment used in maintaining and building roads, fire trails, parking lots, and associated drainage.
  • Prepare standard reports including equipment inventory, and monthly vehicle maintenance and mileage reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Working knowledge of safety practices as they apply to machinery, or industrial facilities or environments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain training and certifications required to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Experience solving moderately complex technical problems and ability to occasionally make decisions, when necessary, with the assistance of well-defined guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively and respectfully with co-workers, customers, and managers.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and related software to prepare reports, complete permit requests, deficiency forms, preventive maintenance work requests, timekeeping entry, and complete web-based training.
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Valid California State Driver's License.

Pay Range
$34.77 - $42.27 Hourly
This position is under a Collective Bargaining Agreement and step structure. Step placement will be determined after your qualifications are fully assessed during the interview process.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Davis Bacon Act

The Laboratory performs a variety of work, including some that may fall under Davis Bacon Act requirements. When work scope falls under this Act, the Laboratory complies with the prevailing wage requirements.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
