Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Sector is searching for a Staff Automation Technology Lead to join the Engineering Products team within Strategy Integration and Operations. The location for this opportunity is Rancho Bernardo, CA and will be primarily based within our office spaces to support the program and business needs. Operating on our 9/80 schedule, meaning you will get every other Friday off. The position MAY have Hybrid work available; NOTHING IS GUARANTEED .

You will join the staff of Chief Engineers and Program Engineering Managers that support program execution of ongoing common vehicle systems development activities including software development, testing, integration and sustainment.

The Automation Technology Lead serves as the focal for automation technologies and tools associated with software/integrated testing, software development, and data acquisition support for the Tactical VMS, Core VMS, and Common Avionics Design groups. The Automation Lead teams with product leads to achieve efficient, effective, and innovative Engineering solutions. The Automation Lead coordinates activities with programs, help and guidance, and ensures common products are suited and developed consistently with their needs to reduce program costs. The Automation Lead also identifies technologies and tools created by NGC programs that may be commonized or supported to be used by other programs within NGC.

The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge regarding automated testing and flight critical software development while working in a fast-paced development program. The candidate must also be comfortable with coordinating with Customer program technical leads and chief engineers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in resolving complex problems are essential.

Job Responsibilities:

In this role, the key responsibilities may include:
  • Strategic Planning - Define the automation roadmap, prioritize initiatives,
  • Architecture & Design - Design reusable framework for test automation and CI/CD pipeline, and embedded test flows
  • Implementation & Deliveries - Lead development of automated UI tests, API tests, data-validation scripts
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship - Conduct regular knowledge-sharing sessions on AI-augmented testing, model-registry management, and embedded-firmware validation


This position reports to the Engineering Products Chief Engineer and supports the Program Manager. The candidate will be the focal point for software development and integration automation, test and integration automation, and data acquisition tools. The position required supporting Program Management team with broad software development automation, test, and integration experience and down-and-in technical guidance to support product development and delivery teams. The candidates will be subject matter experts for key automation tools/technologies developed on programs and support their commonization and proliferation via relationships with the developers, indoctrination into common products, and/or internal marketing support. In addition, the candidate must have interpersonal skill to maintains the working relationships with the Customers, providing timely communication and engagement to resolve technical questions posed by the customers.

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) from an accredited university and at least 12 years' relevant experience, or STEM master's degree with 10 years' relevant experience, or a STEM PHD with 8 years' relevant experience.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C, C++).
  • Deep knowledge of test automation frameworks
  • Expertise in CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure Pipelines)
  • Experience with container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes
  • Embedded-software competence: build systems
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted testing tools or LLM-based test generation.
  • Your ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government Secret clearance, and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and complete projects on time and on budget.
  • Direct internal as well as external customer interface experience.
  • Recent Test Automation and AI experience
  • Candidates will have a minimum of 5 years developing and managing automation tools or technologies.
  • Experience with supporting software automation technologies.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication excellence with customers and all levels of management.


Primary Level Salary Range: $177,000.00 - $265,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
