Duties

Performs Combat Arms Training. Presents repetitive courses or designated blocks of longer courses and presents training material and instruction covering proper use of handguns, rifles, machine guns and other base defense/ground combat skills equipment, in accordance with approved lesson plans and course control documents. Instruction may take place in outdoor or indoor training facilities and will require multiple police/combat agility skill demonstrations. Instructor makes adjustments in presentation or other instructional methods to resolve common classroom problems, to include those of student motivation and communication, as well as, last minute agenda schedule or student changes, student problems, equipment malfunctions, or lack of supplies. Uses training aids and devices in addition to those listed in the POI in a manner that enhances training outcome. Adjusts subject matter discussions to assure material is assimilated by all students. Maintains accountability and ensures security for weapons/ammunition/explosives utilized in the course of instruction in accordance with applicable Air Force Instructions. May oversee the work activities of subordinates and Traditional Guardsmen. Trains employees in assigned duties and responsibilities. Assigns work, establishes priorities, and ensures technical quality of work products. Manages and oversees the installation ground weapons training and maintenance program; serves as an instructor and inspects ground weapons. Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the installation's ground weapons training and maintenance program, incorporating safety requirements, and maintains adherence to safety regulations. Promptly evaluates accidents to determine cause and ensure safety guidelines are followed and necessary precautions are taken to prevent further occurrences. Performs self- inspections and presents detailed reports to senior leadership. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures. Monitors special environmental requirements, such as lead removal. Coordinates with the local Civil Engineering Squadron personnel on various issues, to include development of a joint hazardous waste disposal site and procedures that comply with local environmental laws. Monitors the environment for noise hazards, health problems, and all other safety hazards. Directs and monitors security/resources protection program and procedures. Monitors explosive safety and munitions movement's safety procedures. Notifies appropriate unit commanders of current no-shows rates and third time failures, initiates follow-up actions, and briefs data, as directed. Oversees and assists with the maintenance and inspection of all ground weapons assigned to the installation or covered by host tenant support agreements. Submits forecast and requisition for training weapons, equipment, tools, gauges, target material, and expendable items. Validates the annual munitions allocation product. Develops and publishes local operating instructions (OIs) and reviews other directives for updates as needed. Prepares annual budget to ensure proper funding for program management. Oversees establishing, updating, and maintaining office records of various types. Requisitions office supplies, printing support, and related material. Conducts training classes for military and/or civilians to meet established training/qualification goals. Represents the Security Forces Squadron (SFS) with a variety of installation and functional area organizations. Provides SFS position on ground combat weapons issued at installation conferences and task group meetings. Coordinates and maintains liaisons with local civilian agencies on matters concerning weapons training and maintenance. Meets with key customer and coordinating officials to assess customer satisfaction, explain organization policy and procedures and resolve problems that arise. Provides or ensures that subordinates provide customer guidance and training. Participates in special projects and initiatives and performs assignments. Identifies the need for special projects and initiates milestones and goals. Evaluates reports by analyzing facts and performing appropriate research and prepares detailed responses. Determines appropriate recommendations for unresolved or questionable problems and performs follow-up. Prepares background papers and documentary support for squadron leadership on ground combat weapons and munitions policies, issues and proposals. When needed or directed, performs and enforces the full range of security forces duties within the military installation. Incumbent is exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties. Incumbent has full powers to detain, pursue or direct detaining person(s) who attempt to flee crime scenes, an active shooter, or other means of resisting arrest. Incumbent carries a firearm as required or directed. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • MILITARY GRADE REQUIREMENT: Due to the nature of this position, the minimum military grade is Airman (Amn/E2) and the maximum military grade is Master Sergeant (MSgt/E7).

  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration. This will not exceed 14 days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by the TAG.

  • Employee must successfully complete annual/recurring req. specified. Courses : Law of Armed Conflict, Explosive Safety, Professional and Unprofessional relationships, Suicide Awareness, and other programs as directed by the Security Forces Commander.
Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience which is directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

GS-08 - Must possess at least one year equivalent to at least next lower grade level. Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Resume must have complete dates and hours worked per week for each occurrence of both civilian and military employment (Example: 2 JAN 1980 to 3 MAR 1981; 0800-1630 M-F or JAN 1980 to MAR 1981; 40 hrs/wk) Use of year only will result in disqualification. The duties listed must fully substantiate -in your own words- that you meet the minimum requirements and specialized experience listed above, in detail; otherwise, you will not be considered qualified for this position.

Length of time is not of itself qualifying. Your experience will be evaluated on the basis of duties performed. Your record of experience, training, and education must show possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties of the position:

-Knowledge of security and security forces requirements, procedures, and tactics to support installation physical security.
-Knowledge of firearms and tactics for employing them in emergency situations.
-Knowledge of principles and techniques of instruction used in combat arms weapons training and firing range instruction.
-Knowledge of combat arms facilities management, including maintenance, classrooms, firing range structures, munitions buildings, and weapon vaults.
-Knowledge of safety, security, and EEO regulations, practices, and procedures.
-Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
-Ability to train and evaluate instructors and students in the classroom on instruction techniques of assigned weapons.
-Knowledge of Security Forces' procedures and operating methods to independently perform the full range of Security Forces activities, to include protection level resources, installation entry controls, armed responses and dispatch duties.
-Ability to directly provide budget input.
-Knowledge of small arms and maintenance requirements.
-Knowledge of Air Force supply and equipment systems.
-Ability to establish effective working relationships with SF branch/section chiefs, contributing to a cooperative working environment and successful mission accomplishments.
-Knowledge of applicable Air Force, Department of Defense law enforcement, and security rules, regulations, instructions, practices, principles and procedures, including force protection, integrated base defense, anti-terrorism, and physical security.
-Knowledge of police officer procedures and operating methods to independently perform the full range of Security Forces activities, to include protection level resources, installation entry controls, armed responses and dispatch duties.

Additional information

- INDEFINITE: Indefinite employees may be separated with a 30 days' notice. Indefinite employment is temporary and is expected to last more than one year but no more than five consecutive years. Indefinite employees may be converted to permanent without further competition. AKNG permanent technician will retain their permanent status if selected for this position, and may be promoted, reassigned or changed to lower grade if selected for this position, and will be required to return to their permanent position unless action is made on a permanent basis. Permanent authorization may not cross service boundaries, or funding categories, (i.e., ARNG to ANG, or 176th WG to 168th WG).

- If you are a current Federal employee or former Federal employee, you must submit a copy of your latest SF-50 "Notification of Personnel Action" and/or a copy of the SF-50. You may submit your most recent performance appraisal.

- The National Guard is exempt from the Veterans Preference Act. Submission of a copy of your DD-214 is not required unless you are hired for technician position.

- Cost of Living Allowance (COLA): Entitled to 1.49% COLA in addition to base salary, subject to change.
