Reporting to the Program Manager, the Crane Operator (CAT 3) supports laboratory operations at NUWC Newport through the operation of Category 3 weight-handling equipment used for material movement, equipment positioning, and operational support activities. The operator performs routine lifting operations while ensuring compliance with Navy safety standards and laboratory operational requirements.This is a contingent position expected to be located in Newport, RI.

The operator performs routine lifting operations while ensuring compliance with Navy safety standards and laboratory operational requirements.This is a contingent position expected to be located in Newport, RI.
What You'll Do
- Operate Category 3 cranes and associated weight-handling equipment in accordance with NAVFAC P-307.
- Support laboratory operations by moving materials, test equipment, and facility components within laboratory spaces.
- Perform routine equipment inspections prior to operation.
- Assist with rigging setup and load preparation as required.
- Follow established safety procedures, operational guidance, and laboratory protocols.
- Coordinate with laboratory personnel to safely execute lifts in confined or specialized technical spaces.
- Maintain proper operational documentation and report equipment issues.
- Bid and proposal support if requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- An active secret clearance is required to be considered for this position.
- HS Diploma required.
- Three (3) years of experience operating CAT 3 weight-handling equipment in industrial, laboratory, or government environments preferred.
- Valid CAT 3 Crane Operator certification in accordance with NAVFAC P-307.
- Working knowledge of rigging fundamentals and crane safety procedures.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and safety protocols.
- Must possess basic computer literacy and data entry skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (to include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Must possess strong time management skills.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, changing, and challenging environment.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
Physical Requirements:
- The ability to lift items that may weigh up to 50 pounds.
- The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing such as performing regular shop activities, inspections, or to observe and study operations in an industrial or comparable work area, or on-board ships, submarines, and/or in weapon facilities.
- The ability to operate heavy machinery and industrial tools with limited to no supervision. Examples may include but are not limited to: Electric/Diesel Forklift, CNC Milling Machine, Welding/Soldering, CAT III Overhead Crane, pallet jack, "Big Joe" stand-behind pallet lift mechanism, and more.
