Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Engineer Level 3 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in Clearfield, Utah. We are comfortable both in a lab environment and on the production floor, and we collaborate closely with NDT technicians, test engineers and quality control engineers, program and operation managers, and customers. We're a small group and a close-knit team. Our work is highly dynamic and our activities will vary from project to project. Primary Level Salary Range: $89,400.00 - $134,200.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.

In this role, you will be a part of an Inspection Development Group responsible for:
- Development of advanced NDT inspection technologies and sensors including laser ultrasound, phased array ultrasound, air coupled ultrasonic, THz and GHz, thermography, shearography, digital x-ray and computer aided data analysis
- Design, fabrication, installation and testing of automated inspection systems for internal use
- Integration of advanced NDT inspection technologies into automated systems and their qualification for the production
- NDT Support of production programs throughout the whole life cycle
Responsibilities Include:
- Develop and implement non-destructive inspection techniques (automated and hand-held), including training of production personnel
- Perform inspections of various composite structures in support of production; evaluation and interpretation of indication for the Structural Engineers in an expeditious time frame to allow rapid MRB response; support other MRB activities including writing SWI for additional inspections
- Assist with the design, fabrication & qualification of defect standards
- Write technique sheets, procedures, including SWI and EWIs, and reports, as required
- Qualify NDT techniques and automated inspection systems for the programs
- Provide NDT cost estimates for the programs
- Assist with training & certification of NDT personnel
- May perform inspections of various composite structures in support of development, production startup, MRB, or other activities
- Assist with instrument & system calibrations; support internal and external audits.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 4 years of relevant experience OR; Masters in STEM with 3 years of relevant experience OR; PhD in STEM with 0 years of experience OR In lieu of a degree, 4 additional years of relevant experience may be considered.
- Level 3 NAS410 certification in Ultrasonic Testing (certification will be verified) OR Level 3 NAS410 certification in another NDT method and Level 2 NAS410 certification in Ultrasonic Testing and ability to obtain Level 3 certification within 6-months of start.
- Active DoD Secret clearance required
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Ultrasonic Testing of composite materials in aerospace or manufacturing environment
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics
- Experience in Ultrasonic Phased Array technology
- Experience in Thermography and Shearography
- Functional knowledge of instruments, systems, and software used for ultrasonic inspection of composites using manual or automated pulse echo, through transmission, pitch-catch, and phased array techniques
- Proficiency with CAD/solid modeling software
- Current Secret clearance
Competencies for Success:
- Capable of setting up and performing inspections, and interpreting results using available equipment & software, given general guidelines and requirements with a limited amount of supervision
- Able to interpret codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control NDT method(s)
- Capable of selecting the method and technique for a specific inspection
- Capable of preparing and verifying the adequacy of procedures, work instructions, reports & presentations
- Capable of training NDT personnel and supporting the examination and certification of personnel
