Scott AFB, IL (On/Off-Site)

We are seeking a System Operations Engineer II to support and evolve secure, cloud-based systems critical to logistics operations within a DoD environment. This role is responsible for maintaining high availability, performance, and compliance of mission-critical services hosted in AWS.

While this is primarily a Systems Operations position, approximately 25–35% of your time will be dedicated to DevSecOps engineering, partnering with the DevOps team to improve CI/CD pipelines, automate operational workflows, and enhance the security, reliability, and scalability of our deployment processes.

This position is initially 100% on-site at Scott AFB. Hybrid eligibility may be considered based on project needs and performance.

What you will do:
System Operations (Primary Focus ~65% - 75%)

Monitor and maintain AWS-hosted infrastructure to ensure availability, performance, and security compliance.
Analyze system logs, metrics, and security events to proactively detect and resolve issues.
Support and execute production deployments using established CI/CD pipelines.
Troubleshoot Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases, Windows Server environments, and containerized applications.
Monitor and support workloads running on AWS ECS and EKS clusters.
Participate in on-call rotations to diagnose and resolve production issues.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), runbooks, and knowledge base documentation.
Manage SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle processes, including renewals and troubleshooting.
Ensure systems remain compliant with DoD cybersecurity requirements and internal security controls.

DevSecOps (~25% - 35%)

Collaborate with DevOps engineers to enhance CI/CD pipelines for reliability, security, and zero-downtime deployments.
Automate repetitive operational tasks using scripting (Bash) and infrastructure tooling.
Contribute to root cause analysis efforts and implement pipeline or infrastructure improvements to prevent recurrence.
Integrate security best practices into deployment workflows, including scanning, configuration validation, and hardening.
Recommend and implement improvements to infrastructure-as-code, containerization strategies, and deployment automation

What we like to see:
A proactive, systems-thinking mindset with a strong interest in cloud infrastructure, automation, and security.
Ability to move beyond ticket resolution and identify systemic improvements.
Structured troubleshooting approach with strong documentation discipline.
Comfortable operating in a regulated, security-conscious environment.
Collaborative team player who communicates clearly across operations and development teams.
Demonstrated ownership of systems and follow-through on problem resolution.

You Should be familiar with:
AWS cloud services (EC2, RDS, ECS/EKS, IAM, CloudWatch, S3, etc.)
CI/CD tools such as Jenkins (or similar pipeline automation tools)
Bash Scripting
System monitoring, logging, and alerting tools
Linux system administration (Red Hat preferred)
Container technologies (Docker)
Basic networking concepts (DNS, TLS, load balancing, firewalls)
Fundamental cybersecurity principles (least privilege, patching, hardening).

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
3 - 5 years of experience in system administration, cloud operations, or IT infrastructure support.
Active Security+ certification (required prior to start).
U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
AWS certification (Cloud Practitioner, SysOps Administrator – Associate, or equivalent).
Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
Experience supporting RedHat Enterprise Linux, MongoDB, PostgreSQL.
Familiarity with STIG implementation and DoD compliance frameworks.
Prior experience supporting federal or defense IT systems

Benefits:
Paid Time Off
Medical benefits: Health Care, Vision, Dental, Long and Short Term Disability, and Life Insurance
Dependent Care and Healthcare Flexible Spending Accounts
Annual Health Reimbursement Arrangement
Education Assistance Program
401(k) Plan

This position is initially 100% on-site at Scott Air Force Base (SAFB), with the potential for hybrid remote work based on performance and project needs. This position also requires a government security clearance, so candidates must be U.S. citizens and eligible for work without a visa sponsorship
