Duties

  • You will compile detailed scopes and work packages for the overhaul, repair, and modification of heavy mobile equipment.
  • You will estimate materials and identify shops required to assist with performing the work.
  • You will initiate action to obtain necessary materials through shop stores, vendors, or local manufacturers.
  • You will investigate and resolves problems concerning sources of supply substitutions, or interchangeability.
  • You will revise plans and estimates as work progresses.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Planner & Estimator (Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic), WD-5803-08 without more than normal supervision performing duties including:
Operating heavy mobile equipment and diagnosing mechanical defects or performance problems.

Imposing, substituting, or modifying parts when duplicates cannot be obtained.

Applying trade background to determine proper sequence of work.

Determining procedures necessary to order and expedite materials used in maintenance and repair operations.

Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, drawings, etc.

Incumbent must be able to climb and walk-up ladders and or scaffolding to cranes approximately 100 feet in height, crawl through workspaces, and in tight quarters, excessive heat, cold, humid areas and in close proximity to moving machinery. Incumbent will be required to lift objects weighing less than 50 lbs.; position requires moderate amount of bending, stooping, climbing, and walking. Works inside and outside on the waterfront in all weather conditions. Aboard weight handling equipment. On slippery or uneven walking surfaces, exposed to electrical voltage, sharp edges, overhead hazards, and foot hazards. Assignments may require the use of a respirator; incumbent will be respirator qualified. May be required to work in nuclear and/or radiologically controlled areas.
