Department Summary:

MITRE is seeking a Communications & Networking Engineer for the N174 All Domain Integration work program supporting PEO Communications, Command, Control and Battle Management (C3BM) and Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS). The role will primarily focus on development of airborne communications capabilities and their integration within the DAF Battle Network. The candidate will provide subject matter expertise with emphasis on beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) communications, tactical network architectures, and edge processing environments. This role includes hands-on engineering in lab and field/flight-test contexts, including experimentation and rapid prototyping, and contributing to sponsor-facing deliverables and technical interchange activities.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Act as an individual technical contributor in a collaborative team environment to identify, assess, prototype, and implement communications and networking solutions
  • Work in partnership with multiple stakeholders to develop optimal solutions which account for multiple variables and perspectives
  • Serve as a technical contributor supporting C3BM communications and networking efforts, including planning, development, integration, and testing.
  • Develop and assess airborne communications system architectures (airborne networking, transport, routing, gateways, SATCOM integration) supporting resilient C2 in contested environments.
  • Provide design and integration support for edge compute systems providing resilient networking and data management capability to tactical platforms.
  • Support prototyping and integration of compute and networking solutions, 3U OpenVPX Modular Functional Payloads (MFPs) and associated support equipment (networking, cryptography, etc.).
  • Plan and conduct experimentation and rapid prototyping, including lab integration, test events, field demonstrations, and flight-test preparation/execution.
  • Design and implement software development and deployment approaches for edge processing environments (e.g., containerized services, CI/CD considerations, configuration management, secure remote management, observability/telemetry, and constrained-resource deployment patterns).
  • Collaborate with sponsor program offices, FFRDC/UARC/contractor teams, and platform integrators; contribute to technical interchange meetings, requirements discussions, and acquisition support activities (as needed).
  • Author and brief technical work products (e.g., analyses, recommendations, system engineering artifacts, interface definitions, experiment reports, and decision briefings) to C3BM stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or similar field.
  • Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret/SCI (or higher) security clearance
  • Experience working with or integrating BLOS communications solutions (e.g., SATCOM networks/terminals and/or other BLOS transports) and understanding of operational constraints (latency, link variability, contested environments).
  • Working knowledge of network engineering fundamentals (IP networking, protocols, routing, QoS, monitoring/telemetry, troubleshooting in lab/field environments).
  • Experience supporting systems engineering activities such as requirements decomposition, interface definition, integration planning, verification/test planning, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience with airborne communications and networking systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with airborne BLOS communications systems, including commercial (starlink, Inmarsat, etc.) and military (PTW, etc.) waveforms
  • Familiarity with Juniper SSR (Session Smart Routing) design, configuration, deployment, or integration into tactical/edge environments.
  • Familiarity with content based data routing concepts.
  • Experience with modular open systems architecture hardware and software, including 3U OpenVPX and SOSA hardware and OMS/UCI and AMS-GRA software design.
  • Experience with experimentation and rapid prototyping for airborne or tactical communications (e.g., demonstrations, flight tests, integrated lab environments, iterative prototype cycles).
  • Experience with edge software development/deployment.
