Position Description & Qualifications

Serco is seeking a Principal Sustainment Operations Analyst Trainer to join our dynamic team supporting the Joint Staff J7, Joint Training, Deployable Training and Learning Division (DTLD) at Suffolk, Virginia. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team of professionals committed to enhancing operational effectiveness for the current and future joint force.

An active U.S. Department of War (DoW) Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret/SCI clearance.

In this role, you will:
  • Act as a subject matter expert and trainer in Sustainment operations and the Joint Logistics Enterprise for joint, multinational, interagency, and globally integrated exercises and operations.
  • Mentor, train, and support new Observer Trainers (OTs).
  • Participate as a member of Deployable Training Teams (DTTs) observing, training, and providing feedback during exercises and staff assistance visits (SAVs).
  • Ascertain key command challenges at operational and strategic levels and conduct cross-functional analysis for development of lessons learned, insights, and best practices.
  • Understand strategic thought guiding campaign, deliberate, and crisis planning at the operational level.
  • Research strategic documents, real-world operations, and command plans and policies.
  • Conduct trend analysis, enhance battle rhythms, provide operational planning feedback, and develop exercise-related reports.
  • Assist in the development of the Commander's Facilitated After-Action Review (FAAR), Executive Summary Report (ESR), Combined Functional Report (CFR), Internal After Action Review (IAAR), and input into the Joint Lessons Learned Information System (JLLIS).
  • Maintain and update documents such as "Joint Operations Insights and Best Practices", review Joint Doctrine, and edit content for courses within Joint Knowledge Online.
  • Develop and facilitate seminars for National Defense University's Senior Leader Education Programs (PINNACLE, CAPSTONE, and KEYSTONE).


To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • An active U.S. DoD Secret clearance, with ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher with 7 years of joint operational experience, or specialized training and certifications directly related to the requirement.
  • A deep understanding of at least one functional area noted above, particularly within joint operational planning.
  • Familiarity with the commander's decision cycle and joint staff functions.
  • To be willing and able to travel internationally, including to hazardous duty locations (up to 25%).
  • Ability to work on-site in Suffolk, Virginia.
  • Joint or service-level planning experience and ability to present complex information to senior leaders.
  • The expertise in operational planning, trend analysis, and exercise coordination.
  • A strong written and oral communication skills for producing official training documents and reports.


Additional desired experience and skills:
  • Experience on Combatant Command, Joint Task Force, or similar staff.
  • Knowledge of the Joint Planning Process and advanced warfighting concepts.
  • Joint Forces Staff College (JPMEII), Senior Service school graduate, Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS), School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW), or Marine Corps War College (MCWAR) graduate.
  • Experience leading seminars or briefings for flag-level officers.
  • Skilled in producing operational orders, after-action reports, and lessons learned materials.
