VAE, Inc. is looking for a Unified Communications (UC) Systems Engineer to serve as the enterprise Subject Matter Expert (SME). This role provides senior-level technical leadership for large-scale Voice over IP (VoIP) architecture, modernization, migration, and sustainment initiatives across Army enterprise environments. The UC SME guides architecture decisions, oversees complex implementations, and serves as the senior escalation point for advanced voice and unified communications challenges. This position plays a critical role in modernizing Army voice infrastructure, ensuring interoperability between legacy and next-generation systems, and maintaining resilient, high-availability communications capabilities in mission-critical environments.
Responsibilities include:
Lead the design and architecture of large-scale VoIP and Unified Communications solutions.
Develop comprehensive system engineering plans, technical documentation, and modernization roadmaps.
Provide authoritative guidance on enterprise voice design standards, scalability, resiliency, and performance optimization.
Translate operational requirements into technical architectures and deployment strategies.
Provide oversight and technical direction for system deployments, migrations, and decommissioning efforts.
Ensure seamless integration of UC systems into enterprise network and virtualized environments.
Lead technical planning for upgrades, expansions, and technology refresh initiatives.
Oversee high-availability configurations and redundancy strategies for mission-critical voice systems.
Serve as Tier 3/4 escalation point for complex VoIP and interoperability issues.
Lead root cause analysis efforts and drive systemic corrective actions.
Provide technical leadership for non-standard voice operations and specialized configurations.
Guide implementation and validation of STIGs and security hardening measures for UC systems.
Architect and troubleshoot Unified Communications Systems and equipment.
Design and optimize dial plans, call routing, translations/transformations, and SIP dial peers.
Integrate legacy Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) systems within modern VoIP architectures.
Oversee virtualization and UC platform configuration within virtualized environments.
Ensure interoperability across IP networking environments and enterprise infrastructure.
Qualifications
Active Secret Security Clearance
DoD 8570/8140 compliant certification (e.g., Security+)
8–10+ years of progressive Unified Communications / VoIP engineering experience
Demonstrated experience serving as a technical lead or SME in large-scale UC environments
Deep expertise in:
Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) &/or Ribbon AS
Cisco Unity Connection &/or Ribbon Media Server
Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE) &/or Ribbon SBC
SIP, dial plans, call routing, and dial peers
Enterprise VoIP architecture and IP networking
Experience integrating and sustaining legacy TDM systems
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent professional experience
