VAE, Inc. is looking for a Senior UC Technician to serve as the senior on-site technical lead. This role is responsible for leading the installation, migration, modernization, sustainment, and troubleshooting of enterprise Voice over IP (VoIP) and telecommunications infrastructure across CONUS Army installations.
This position requires a seasoned telecommunications professional capable of directing site activities, mentoring junior technicians, interfacing with government stakeholders, and ensuring high-quality execution in both new construction and operational Army environments. The Lead UC Technician functions as the primary escalation point for complex technical issues and ensures deployments are executed to standard, on schedule, and in alignment with program objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the on-site technical lead for UC/VoIP deployments and modernization efforts.
Lead site surveys and translate requirements into actionable design and deployment plans.
Oversee engineering, furnishing, installation, securing, testing, and turnover of VoIP and network systems.
Direct migration and de-installation efforts while minimizing operational disruption.
Lead structured cabling installations including ISP/OSP environments.
Direct installation of backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding systems.
Oversee cable pulling, termination, splicing, and labeling activities to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Perform and validate advanced cable testing and troubleshooting (continuity, opens, shorts, crosses, transposed pairs).
Identify and validate active voice and data circuits.
Ensure accurate documentation of network diagrams, configurations, and routing.
Develop, refine, and enforce detailed SOPs and technical documentation.
Ensure adherence to BICSI standards and telecommunications best practices.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior technicians.
Serve as a key interface between field teams, program leadership, and government representatives.
Qualifications
Active Secret Security Clearance
DoD 8570 compliant certification (e.g., Security+)
5–10 years of progressive experience in VoIP, unified communications, or telecommunications infrastructure
Demonstrated experience leading site deployments or infrastructure teams
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
Extensive experience supporting enterprise VoIP and voice modernization efforts
Strong knowledge of networking principles and IP fundamentals
Expertise in ISP/OSP cabling, including:
DSX patch panels
Main Distribution Frames (MDF)
Fiber and copper patch panels
Copper and fiber telecom color codes
Familiarity with BICSI standards and infrastructure design best practices
Working knowledge of power distribution systems (AC, DC, UPS)
Ability and willingness to travel extensively
