Duties
Help
  • Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to OB/GYN patients and their newborns with medical conditions ranging from routine care to those having complex complications requiring sophisticated, highly technical care and treatment.
  • Conducts an advanced level of specialized obstetrical and gynecological nursing care to patients based on a provider's medical care plan and the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient and family.
  • Serves as Charge Nurse on a rotational basis.
  • Makes decisions regarding priorities for patient care for shift assignments.
  • Coordinates with other services/departments as required for diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Develops nursing care plans and procedures, setting standards of care, prescribing special care and identifying specific nursing problems for all patients.
  • Performs procedures, treatments, and medication administration. Assesses patient's response to medication administration.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet annual requirements.
  • Provides evidence-based instructions and education to patient/significant other and/or family members/caregivers.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must maintain a valid, unrestricted, and current registered nurse license (with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions) in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certificate, and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Nurse (Inpatient Clinical/OB-GYN):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes: (1) providing ante/intra/postpartum and postoperative nursing care of obstetrical and gynecological patients; (2) setting up and operating specialized medical equipment (i.e., resuscitators, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, ventilators, and electronic fetal monitoring devices); (3) administering medications (orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, topically, etc.); (4) responding to adverse signs and symptoms in order to react and administer appropriate care and emergency treatment; AND (5) Candidates should be skilled in newborn assessment, family education, and identifying deviations from normal parameters, while collaborating with providers to implement timely, evidence-based interventions in accordance with established standards of care.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
