Scope: The type of training includes the following:
• The training will instruct strategic and written appellate advocacy skills relevant to criminal
cases.
• Skills covered will include:
- How to analyze trial records
- How to brainstorm a theory of the case and appellate issues based on a review of the trial
records
- How to develop a persuasive appellate story from the facts of the case
- How to develop an appellate strategy
- How to write a persuasive appellate brief, incorporating storytelling elements; primacy;
recency; appropriate repetition; fact-based, evocative, and image-creating language and/or
graphics; transitions; clarity; and juxtaposition
- How to write a persuasive statement of facts in an appellate brief
• Instruction will address skills both in theory and through interactive application by the students
to a case they have reviewed in preparation for the training.
• The instruction will preferably focus on the defense perspective of criminal appeals (i.e., with a
focus on representing the person convicted of the crime(s))
• The instruction will preferably qualify for credit as Continuing Legal Education.
• Number of People Trained
- Approximately 6 in 2026 (Between 2 and 8 in future years)
Duration of Training:
- 7 hours per day (excluding lunch) for 2-3 days for a total of 21 hours.
Position: Legal Writing Trainer
Qualifications:
• Education: A JD from an accredited law school is the primary requirement.
• Experience: Substantial, high-quality legal practice experience in reviewing appellate records
and written appellate advocacy. Experience in appellate advocacy in criminal cases is preferred.
• Teaching Experience: Prior teaching experience in written appellate advocacy is preferred.
Skills: Demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback on appellate
strategy, development of appellate issues from appellate records, and appellate writing
techniques and best practices.
Period: Projected September 2026
Location: Training will be in person, not virtual. Joint Base Andrews is preferred. Other locations in
the National Capital Region (Washington DC Area) are acceptable.

The above salary range represents the range expected for the position; however, final salary offers are based on a number of factors such as the position's responsibilities; the candidate's experience, education, and skills; location; travel required; and current market conditions.
