Primary Function
Repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors. Work involves most of the following: Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. In general, the work of the Motor Vehicle Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent. Required to transport equipment and set up remote test sites.
Additionally, produces replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of metal parts of mechanical equipment. Work involves most of the following: interpreting written instructions and specifications, planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments, and setting up and operating standard machine tools. Responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment. In general, the machinist's work normally requires rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Essential Duties
Vehicle Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Repair, rebuild, or overhaul major vehicle assemblies including:
- Engines
- Transmissions and drivetrains
- Fuel systems and fuel injection systems
- Ignition and electrical systems
- Brake systems and suspension components
- Steering systems
- Replace worn, damaged, or defective components such as piston rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, and valves.
- Grind and adjust valves and perform engine tuning and performance adjustments.
- Rebuild carburetors, injectors, and related fuel system components.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and servicing in accordance with established maintenance schedules.
- Conduct operational testing to verify proper functioning following repairs.
Equipment Transport and Field Support
- Operate government or contractor vehicles to transport equipment, tools, and materials to and from test locations.
- Support setup, teardown, and relocation of equipment at remote test sites and field environments.
- Perform field-level troubleshooting and repair of vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Ensure vehicles and support equipment are fully mission-capable and ready for test operations.
Machining and Fabrication Support
- Fabricate replacement parts and components required for repair and maintenance of vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, specifications, and written instructions.
- Plan machining operations including selection of materials, tooling, feeds, and speeds.
- Set up and operate standard machine tools including:
- Lathes
- Milling machines
- Drill presses
- Grinders
- Other standard machine shop equipment
- Shape metal parts to required tolerances and specifications.
- Perform fitting, assembly, and alignment of machined parts.
- Modify or fabricate specialized tools, fixtures, or components as required.
Measurement, Inspection, and Quality Control
- Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other measuring devices.
- Verify dimensional accuracy and tolerances of machined parts and repaired components.
- Inspect mechanical systems and fabricated components to ensure compliance with specifications.
Documentation and Maintenance Records
- Maintain maintenance logs, service records, and repair documentation.
- Document repairs performed, parts replaced, and maintenance actions completed.
- Maintain machining records and fabrication documentation as required.
- Provide input to maintenance procedures and technical documentation.
Tool and Equipment Maintenance
- Maintain tools, machine shop equipment, and maintenance equipment in safe and operational condition.
- Ensure proper care, storage, and accountability of assigned tools and equipment.
- Maintain safe working environment in accordance with applicable safety procedures.

Required Qualifications
- Requires a Secret security clearance.
- One of the following: Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in automotive repair, diesel mechanics, machinist trade, or related field OR Technical school training in automotive repair, diesel mechanics, or machining
- Military training in vehicle maintenance or machinist specialty
- High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of relevant vehicle maintenance and machining experience
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in motor vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing, repairing, and rebuilding vehicle systems and assemblies.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing machining and fabrication tasks preferred.
- Experience operating machine shop equipment including lathes and milling machines preferred.
- Experience supporting military, test range, or heavy equipment maintenance operations preferred.
- Experience supporting field operations and remote site work preferred.
