Duties

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position has a minimum entry age of 16 years old. Candidates younger than 16 will not be able to begin employment until the age of 16.
  • You must be enrolled at an approved/accredited school on a full-time basis in a study program leading to a high school diploma or post-secondary technical certificate following normal completion of senior year or certificate completion requirements.
  • Currently enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE or Post-Secondary Technology or Trade Certificate Programs or equivalent course.
  • Required to maintain at least a 2.0 scholastic average as a student that is predictive of graduation.
  • Must be recommended by the school representative (CTE or Career Instructor or Counselor) and selected by the activity for student trainee position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:

1) Enrollment in a high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and

2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education: (i) A technical or vocational school; (ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university; (iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or (iv) A home-school curriculum.

Applications will be accepted from students who expect to complete qualifying education within 9 months from the date of application. However, agencies are required to verify that the education has been completed successfully before any applicant can be appointed (report to work); therefore, your selection or start date may be impacted by proof and completion of all position requirements.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 180 days of successful completion of the program.

To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
  • Complete at least 480 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program (320 hours if they receive a waiver)
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
  • Perform their job successfully
The Pathways appointment has an initial appointment at the GS-01 grade level. There is no guarantee of future employment beyond the completion of the second work period. However, the agency will have 180 days to non-competitively convert the student to a Career Conditional WG-01 Helper Trainee position, provided they have acquired no less than 480 hours (320 hours if they receive a waiver) of documented work experience, and meet all entry requirements of the Helper Program. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

The Work Study program is designed to provide work experience on or in support of naval maintenance and repair projects under the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility Command in Kitsap County of the State of Washington. Work assignments will be at the Bremerton, WA worksite.

Credit for work experience credits and/or Career and Technical Education (CTE) credits may be available via the educational institutions career and technical advisors.

Applicants must be available to work the normal dayshift, full time during both of the following defined work periods:
Work Period 1: June 29th through August 28, 2026. 44 regular workdays - 352 work hours available.
Work Period 2: February 22nd through June 25, 2027. 88 regular workdays - 704 work hours available.
Work assignments will be of a rotational nature to provide the applicant with experience of up to 15 trades or projects.

Selectees will be Excepted Service Appointments as Pathways - Internships under 5 CFR362.201. Program participants must complete their Certificate/Degree requirements and acquire no less than 480 hours (320 hours if they receive a waiver) of work experience in order to be eligible for non-competitive conversion to Civil Service Career-Conditional Appointments.

If converted to the competitive service, the competitive service appointment has promotion potential to the WG-5 grade level. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.
