Functional Architect – Facilities Services
The Facilities Services Team operates as a full-service, in‑house A/E consulting group with deep expertise in building design, building systems, and regulatory codes. The team delivers architectural and engineering assessments, design drawings, bid documentation, and construction administration for a wide range of projects—from small renovations to full laboratory and cleanroom buildouts.
Working within a multidisciplinary environment, the Architect supports both long‑term and short‑term facilities planning and design initiatives. This role is responsible for translating end‑user needs into programmatic requirements, developing architectural concepts through full construction documentation, and supporting projects through bidding, construction, and closeout. Project types include office environments, secure areas, laboratories, cleanrooms, and other specialized R&D spaces.
Key Responsibilities
Partner with customers and end users to define project scope, develop program statements and basis‑of‑design documents, and prepare presentation materials for approvals.
Conduct field investigations to document existing conditions and recommend improvements.
Support project scoping and review cost estimates.
Prepare space plans and produce SD/DD/CD drawing packages using AutoCAD and Revit for both renovation and new‑build conditions.
Develop written documentation required for internal and client approvals.
Perform building code reviews and assessments; prepare project specifications and other design execution documents.
Provide construction administration services, including bid support, RFI responses, submittal reviews, and project closeout.
Conduct studies and perform additional tasks to support Facilities Services
Review design packages from external A/E firms to ensure alignment with project scope and internal design and construction standards.
Collaborate with the Facilities Architecture team to develop and maintain campus architectural standards, including details, CAD/Revit families, and specifications.
Coordinate with internal SMEs (security, ISD, operations, etc.) to inform design development.
Experience & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
Registered Architect in Massachusetts, or ability to obtain licensure within one year.
Experience with research/laboratory and office renovations, particularly in aging or occupied facilities; renovation experience is preferred over new‑construction backgrounds.
Strong working knowledge of building codes and regulatory requirements (IBC, NFPA, ADA, Massachusetts State codes).
Familiarity with government design standards (UFC) and experience with secure government facilities is highly advantageous.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam/Adobe, and Microsoft Office.
Strong communication, leadership, and customer‑service skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects of varying size.
Clear written and verbal presentation skills for developing scopes, program documents, assessments, and code reviews.
Graphic presentation skills using tools such as Enscape, SketchUp, or similar software are desirable.
U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams and overseeing project deliverables.
Familiarity with construction administration workflows and software (e.g., Procore).
