Duties

  • You will design, develop, test, and evaluate radiation instrumentation and other device utilized in the mission of the Navy Dosimetry Center.
  • You will apply principles of the physics of radiation interactions, thermodynamics, optics, mechanics and electronics.
  • You will locate, evaluate, and test commercially available dosimetry instruments by analyzing designs, radiation properties, automation, and by making a determination of the scientific soundness of the principles used.
  • You will test the reliability and stability of the devices to assure that adequate personnel dosimetry can be economically accomplished.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Examples of Qualifying Experience include:
1) Applying knowledge in the areas of radiation dosimetry, the principles of radiation detection and measurements;
2) Professional, scientific, or technical training which has demonstrated capacity for sound independent work primarily in the application of professional knowledge and competence in the field of health physics concerned with the protection of persons and their environment from unwarranted exposure to ionizing radiation;
3) Skilled in reading and interpreting numerous public policies, regulations and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to make recommendations for changing and advancing policies and SOPs; and
4) Strong understanding/skill in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel), basic programming and utilization of databases.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
  • Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
