IT - Data Science
Quantico, VA (On-Site/Office)
Position Description:
The Senior Maintenance & Data SME is the program's "maintenance guru" - the individual who understands the operational maintenance environment at the senior leader level, the data that drives maintenance decisions, and how to translate raw CAN bus and diagnostic data into actionable maintenance intelligence. This role bridges the gap between the technical data science team and the Marines who turn wrenches. This individual defines the queries, validates the visualizations, and ensures that every dashboard output maps to real-world maintenance actions. Drawing from deep experience in military vehicle maintenance operations at the senior leadership level (analogous to a Production Control Chief or Maintenance Officer function), this individual provides the authoritative maintenance domain expertise for the entire program. This role ensures accountability in the human-data interaction chain and mentors the Jr Maintenance SME & Information Specialist.
This position is located onsite in Quantico, VA.
Your future duties and responsibilities:
Serve as the senior maintenance domain authority for the program, ensuring all analytics outputs are operationally valid and actionable
Define and validate the master set of maintenance data queries that drive dashboards and predictive maintenance alerts
Translate operational maintenance requirements into data requirements for the AI/ML and visualization teams
Develop and refine fault code interpretation guides that link CAN bus diagnostic data to Technical Manual work packages and maintenance actions
Review and validate AI/ML model outputs for operational relevance - ensuring predictions map to maintainer-executable actions
Develop the programdata decision-making framework including threshold definitions, alert criteria, and escalation protocols
Interface with senior Marine Corps maintenance leadership, unit maintenance officers, and SYSCOM stakeholders to validate program capability alignment with operational doctrine
Provide maintenance domain expertise for training curriculum development, ensuring FSRs and Marine maintainers understand how to act on program data
Support Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) analysis and Condition Based Assessment (CBA) review processes as defined in MCO 4151.22
Advise on data logger placement optimization based on maintenance-critical subsystems across target platforms (MTVR, JLTV, LVSR, MCT, TRAM, Excavator)
Mentor and guide the Jr Maintenance Functional SME & Information Specialist in maintenance data interpretation and visualization validation
Required qualifications to be successful in this role:
12+ years of hands-on military ground vehicle maintenance experience spanning organizational, intermediate, and depot levels
Senior leadership experience in maintenance management, production control, or maintenance operations (E8+ NCO, CW3+ Warrant Officer, or O4+ Officer equivalent)
Deep knowledge of USMC or Army maintenance management processes, production control workflows, and maintenance reporting systems
Experience with fault diagnostics, vehicle electronic systems, and CAN bus / J1939 / J1708 protocols
Familiarity with GCSS-MC, EMSS, or equivalent maintenance management information systems
Understanding of maintenance-related data - fault codes, operating parameters, fluid analysis results, and equipment condition indicators
Active Secret clearance
Preferred Qualifications
Former USMC Motor Transport (MOS 3521/3529) or Ordnance Maintenance (MOS 2146/2147) senior SNCO or Warrant Officer
Former Army 91-series senior NCO or Maintenance Warrant Officer with production control and fleet management experience
Prior involvement in predictive maintenance pilot programs within DoD
Experience developing maintenance SOPs, TTPs, or decision support tools at the organizational or enterprise level
Familiarity with EFAS (Expeditionary Fluid Analysis System) and oil analysis programs
Experience briefing senior military leadership on maintenance readiness and equipment status
