Senior Ontologist

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Ontologist to support the design, implementation, and governance of enterprise-level ontological frameworks. This role requires a technical leader who can develop complex ontologies, guide cross-functional teams, and ensure alignment with organizational objectives and mission requirements. The Senior Ontologist will work independently on sophisticated ontological structures while contributing to interoperability and knowledge management initiatives across multiple domains. This individual will also represent technical perspectives in governance and policy forums, translating strategic objectives into actionable implementation guidance.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the design, development, and implementation of ontological frameworks aligned with mission objectives.
• Guide and mentor technical teams in ontology engineering best practices.
• Develop and maintain complex ontologies supporting DoD/IC or bioinformatics use cases.
• Support and participate in ontology governance working groups and cross-organizational initiatives.
• Promote interoperability across systems through standardized ontological models.
• Translate strategic policies and objectives into technical ontology artifacts and governance guidance.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across multiple domains to advance knowledge management initiatives.

Required Experience:

• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Ontology, Information Science, Computer Science, Knowledge Engineering, or a related discipline. MA/MS degree with 13+ years of relevant experience, OR BA/BS degree with 15+ years of relevant experience in a discipline aligned with the position's responsibilities.
• Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.
• 3+ years of demonstrated experience supporting ontology governance working groups and initiatives within the DoD/IC.
• 3+ years of experience using Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) frameworks and implementing Common Core Ontologies (CCO).
• 3+ years of experience developing and implementing ontologies modeling phenomena related to DoD/IC operations or bioinformatics applications.

Desired Qualifications:

• 3-5 years of advanced-level competency in SPARQL query language.
• 3-5 years of experience using Python for ontology development, management, and systems integration.
• 3-5 years of experience leading technical implementation teams and participating in strategic planning or governance committees.
