Department Summary:

The Cost and Business Analytics Department within MITRE's Center for Acquisition and Management Sciences (CAMS) Innovation Center solves our FFRDC's and Sponsor's problems by leveraging our capabilities within:
  • Cost Estimation, Schedule, and Risk Analysis
  • Investment Economics & Decision Analysis
  • Strategic Business & Financial Analytics


The MITRE Corporation's Cost & Business Analytics Department is seeking an Economist to support multiple projects solving our customers' most critical economic challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in the intersection of emerging technologies, cost, business, and economic impacts across its diverse membership. The department is looking to strengthen its focus on economic impacts across our national economy and adding leaders who can help address national-level problems by conducting research, evaluating the impact of emerging tech solutions, and assessing the regulatory and policy environment to remove barriers to adoption and transition. Our department is currently seeking an experienced industrial organization economist or related field to support the continued growth of our portfolio of applied economics work across an exciting and diverse set of sponsors. Focused on solving problems for a safer world, we conduct quantitative domestic and international economic modeling and analysis to inform and assess the impacts of changes to policies, regulations, technology, infrastructure, supply and/or demand.

Our teams have expertise in advanced econometrics, macroeconomics and microeconomics, industrial organization, forecasting, policy analysis, computable general equilibrium modeling, complex valuations, cost-benefit analysis, and spatial modeling/statistics. The team brings applied experience in government, industry, and academia. We also partner with leading practitioners from universities around the world in developing world class capabilities. Our work includes sponsorship from across government agencies, as well as a robust applied research program.

Candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment with a collegial team of applied economists and analysts providing a data-driven analytic basis for decision-making. To support the diversified sponsor base, the ideal candidate will have background in one of the following areas: transportation, critical infrastructure, geoeconomics, supply chains, production analysis, international trade, international finance, and applied macroeconomic modelling. This is an applied research environment where tasks are rarely routine and often require novel approaches.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Econometric and economic modeling and analysis, handling large datasets, conducting data driven analysis, policy analysis, sponsor engagement and support, economic analysis in support of regulatory policy, pre- and post-implementation analysis, forecasting, and applied research.

  • Key functions include developing models and performing qualitative and quantitative analyses to understand the economic impact of investments, risk mitigation strategies, options and other government actions
  • Engaging with customers to advise and recommend economic metrics, tools, and policies that result in sustainable solutions
  • Developing strategic external partnerships to further the scope and depth of applied research and research outcomes
  • Economic modeling of integration and/or deployment challenges associated with technology or financing innovations through analytical, experimental, or model-based assessment and modeling policy change impacts
  • Collecting and analyzing financial, political, and socioeconomic data.
  • Conducting surveys and utilizing various sampling techniques.
  • Researching various fields including politics, defense, manufacturing, healthcare, education, energy, etc.
  • Making use of historical data and analyzing market trends.
  • Conducting policy, benefit, and impact assessments in domestic and international economies
  • Custom research using advanced econometric techniques (time series, panel, discrete choice, reduced form causal inference, structural modelling, etc.)


Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Necessary skills include advanced econometrics (time series, discrete choice, panel, and additional methods), economic analysis, handling large data sets, and policy analysis.
  • Mathematical modeling.
  • Knowledge of economic data sets, such as but not limited to: Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Census, IHS Markit, FRED, UN Comtrade, Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Strong attention and accountability to detail required.
  • Draw conclusions from analyses and clearly and concisely articulate key findings in both written and verbal form
  • The ability to work across diverse teams, departments, and other organizations with varied backgrounds in a collaborative environment is required.
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site .


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the following topic areas is desired, but not required: industrial organization, international trade, international finance, supply chains, critical infrastructure, and/or defense.
  • Structural econometric modeling
  • Mathematical modeling
  • Background in international capital and macrofinancial methods is desired, not required
  • Experience with computable general equilibrium modeling is desired, not required.
  • Experience working with government sponsors and agencies desired, not required.
  • PhD, PhD Candidate in Economics
