Duties
Help
  • Prepares and issues paperwork to initiate the Material Release Order (MRO) either by written or verbal request from the customers.
  • Responds to customer Inventory Control Point ICP /Supply Center requests to expedite material regardless of priority.
  • Provides services for the Emergency Supply Operations Center (ESOC) by responding to customer inquiries in the form of email messages and calls made to the Automated Call Distribution phone system.
  • Coordinates with Delivery Term Code OTC carrier regarding the movement of OTC eligible cargo. Contacts transportation assistants within the division to coordinate movement of Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and security (non-OTC) eligible shipments.
  • Verifies NOA and annotates and provides special instructions before sending to freight forwarders for shipping instructions.
  • Receives Military Interdepartmental Purchase Requests (MIPR) from major commands and Inventory Control Points (ICP) for the transportation funding of major end items.
  • Plans shipping dates, material pick up and loading times of equipment and material to be shipped from DLA Distribution Depot to other government activities, both overseas and CON US.
  • Computes and verifies transportation costs and contacts carriers for rates when required.
  • Reviews automated documentation for all types of shipments taking appropriate action to correct any invalid, void, or missing information.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant, your resume and supporting documentation must support:

A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including Time in Grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
  • Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to final destination involving domestic inbound and export shipments.
  • Classifies, rates, routes, and moves a wide range of commodities including hazardous material.

B. Education Substitution: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands
Work is generally of a sedentary nature. Work requires handling of material that may weigh up to 25 pounds. If moving or lifting items over 25 pounds, will request assistance or utilizing lifting devices. May be required to climb ladders and work on safety pallets. During periods of work in the warehouse, work may require some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Work Environment
Work is usually performed in an office setting, however, visits to warehouses, secure areas, or outdoor locations may be necessary to locate and count material. Work may be performed in hazardous areas where chemicals, poisons, and/or low levels of radioactive material is stored; also, may be required to work in refrigerated areas with 42-45-degree temperatures and small freezers where the normal temperature is below 0. Employees are required to wear appropriate safety clothing and equipment as determined by safety requirements and the supervisor.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.
