Kentro is seeking a National Security Systems (NSS) Cyber Engineering & NSM-8 Support Specialist who provides part-time technical and engineering support to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in response to National Security Memorandum NSM-8, Executive Order 14028, and National Security Agency (NSA) directives.

This role supports modernization, Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) initiatives, and secure system operations for National Security Systems (NSS). The position requires hands-on experience across software development, system architecture, infrastructure, and cybersecurity engineering within highly secure environments.

Responsibilities:

NSM-8 & NSS Program Support:
  • Support SSA efforts to comply with NSM-8 and EO 14028 requirements for National Security Systems.
  • Respond to technical and informational requests from NSA and other federal stakeholders.
  • Participate in project-level and team-level meetings to support NSS cybersecurity initiatives.

Engineering & Development Support:
  • Design, develop, and support software, infrastructure, databases, tools, and systems supporting NSS modernization efforts.
  • Develop and maintain software components and supporting database schemas.
  • Conduct unit, integration, system, regression, automated, and program testing to ensure system functionality prior to validation.
  • Support software testing, defect tracking, release, and implementation activities.

System Operations & Sustainment:
  • Support daily system operations, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
  • Provide post-implementation review support to assess system performance and effectiveness.
  • Perform routine maintenance to ensure continued operation of production systems.
  • Support software and system upgrades in secure operational environments.

Architecture & Integration:
  • Identify architectural and design alternatives and provide technical recommendations.
  • Integrate custom-developed applications with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and government systems to enable secure interoperability.
  • Research, prototype, and demonstrate alternative technical solutions to system and infrastructure challenges.

Cyber Resiliency, DR & BCP:
  • Conduct assessments of database, server, and network environments to identify vulnerabilities, resiliency gaps, and recovery needs.
  • Develop and document disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BCP) plans, including:
  • Data restoration strategies
  • Server reconfiguration procedures
  • Network re-establishment approaches
  • Recommend improvements to existing DR and BCP plans.
  • Provide recommendations for new equipment, tools, and services to enhance system resiliency and security.

Documentation & Reporting:
  • Provide technical writing support for project documentation, system designs, and implementation artifacts.
  • Analyze COTS products and industry practices to assess applicability to NSS requirements.

Work Location & Conditions:
  • Work is primarily onsite at SSA Headquarters in Woodlawn, MD, with support at Bluemont, VA, as required.
  • Offsite work must be explicitly authorized by the Task Manager and performed only on government-furnished equipment.
  • Travel will be authorized by SSA based on mission needs.

Salary Range: $155,000-165,000/annually. Factors influencing pay within this range include geography, market demand, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's and 10 years of experience
  • Experience supporting National Security Systems (NSS) or classified environments.
  • Strong background in software engineering, systems engineering, or cybersecurity engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with:
  • Software development and testing
  • Infrastructure and system operations
  • Secure system integration
  • Experience developing technical documentation and system artifacts.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with NSM-8, Executive Order 14028, and NSA cybersecurity directives.1
  • Experience supporting Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) implementations.
  • Experience working in federal or DoD/IC environments.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery, business continuity planning, and system resiliency.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating COTS solutions in secure environments.

Clearance Requirement:
  • Active Top Secret (TS) clearance.
