Duties

The United States Space Force (USSF) Space Systems Command (SSC) at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California is searching for a Chief Engineer (NH-0801-03, GS 12/13 equivalent).

Description:
The Space Systems Command in El Segundo, CA, is searching for a Chief Engineer that will be leading systems engineering oversight for two ACAT-I level programs to develop and field the next generation of Space-based Environmental Monitoring (SBEM) satellites, addressing top-priority DoD weather requirements. This role involves directing systems planning for the design, development, manufacturing, and sustainment of both the microwave operational system and the EO/IR prototype systems to ensure program success. The individual will provide expert technical advice to government program managers on all EWS and WSF-related projects and will produce the necessary documentation and briefings as requested.

Furthermore, the candidate will support each project team in preparing, evaluating, and implementing methods and techniques to improve system performance, reliability, and maintainability. They will participate in developing branch-level program documentation and progress assessments for all acquisition phases within the WSF and EWS programs, interfacing with multiple internal and external organizations.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of space satellite systems engineering processes, current DoD/USSF/SSC engineering regulations, and technical standards, along with familiarity with JCIDS processes and Middle Tier Acquisitions. A bachelor's degree in engineering is required at a minimum, with a master's in engineering being highly desired.

The candidate must hold a DAWIA Level III certification in Systems Engineering and be capable of advising leadership on the latest technical standards and guidance. Responsibilities will include generating comprehensive technical reports for DoD and Congressional requirements-such as SEP, TEMP, and cybersecurity-and consolidating various contractor technical data to produce progress reports on behalf of the materiel leader.

  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • This position has been designated for drug testing. Incumbent is subject to random urinalysis testing as a condition of employment.
  • A professional engineering degree at the bachelor's level from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Employee may be required to work extended or other than normal duty hours to include evenings and weekends and may be subject to recall.
  • Incumbent may be required to report to work during base exercises, contingencies, or emergency situations and overtime/comp time/credit hours may be required to accomplish assigned duties.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • This position has been designated as an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP).
  • Employee must within 30-days of assuming this position and by 31 October annually thereafter, file an OGE-450, "Confidential Financial Disclosure Report." Employee is required to attend annual ethics and procurement integrity training.
  • Subject to Temporary Duty Assignment (TDY): Approximately 15 days per year.
  • This position will close after 5 business days or 75 applications, whichever comes first.
