Duties
Help
  • Perform renovation, demilitarization, loading, modification and maintenance of a wide variety of high explosives and ammunition items.
  • Perform disassembly and breakdown of ammunition items by operating a variety of machines, equipment and fixtures, such as pull-apart or breakdown machines, defusing, deboostering, decrimping and debanding machines.
  • Perform manual assembly operations such as assembling a fuse, inserting booster charges and detonators, screwing or bolting down components to achieve mechanical strength.
  • Know the cycle of operation of multiple work processes, machines and equipment involving several controls performing more than one operation.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Explosives Operator ~ without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common operation of a semi-automatic machine with multiple controls. Disassemble ammunition, explosives, ammunition components or fused projectiles in a production-type environment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Work involves lifting, carrying and handling of moderately heavy objects weighing 25 to 40 pounds at a production pace and occasionally items exceeding 40 pounds and up to 100 pounds. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device. The two persons lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts. Work requires sitting, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, and long periods of standing. Endurance and hand-eye coordination are required to work at a set pace and rhythm for long periods.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed indoors or outdoors in covered areas or passageways which provide some protection. Work areas are usually well lighted and ventilated. Some operations, however, such as melting powder or steaming out powder, cause uncomfortable steam or heat in the work area. Workers are required to stand on floors made of concrete, lead, or conductive composition. They wear protective clothing such as specially treated coveralls, respirators, and goggles on many assignments. They are frequently exposed to moisture and wet floors as a result of cleanup operations in powder working areas. They are exposed to fumes from acids and explosives. They are exposed to the possibility of explosion and flash fire. There is chance of injuries ranging from loss of life or limbs to burns, cuts, bruises, sprains, and nausea.

Position may be made permanent without further competition.
