Skilled Furniture Upholsterer – heavy materials

Location: Washington DC, Capitol Hill 20515
Citizenship – Must be a US citizen and able to pass a background check
Hours: 5:30am – 2:30pm
Compensation: 27.73/hr. + health and welfare of 5.09/hour

Requirements and job duties:
•2- 4 years of experience working in the upholstery trade with furniture, leather, and heavy materials.
• Provide portfolio of samples of work
• Work independently on assigned tasks and efficiently perform duties within expected time frames.
• Perform shop upkeep to include daily sweeping of the floor, taking trash bins to the loading dock, general cleaning, and basic maintenance of shop equipment.
• Adhere to safety requirements by wearing steel toe shoes and safety glasses (nonprescription glasses provided), as we are unable to supply steel toe safety shoes.
• Demonstrate comprehensive skills and knowledge in furniture upholstery, covering tasks such as cover removal, tie springs, frame construction, and final cover application.
• Ability to build up furniture upholstery and padding from a bare frame to completion with minimal assistance to include 8- way hand-tied springs and hand-stitched cake seats.
• Utilize various commercial sewing machines proficiently with minimal assistance.
• Cut and sew non-complicated fabric and leather covers with minimal guidance.
• Safely and accurately operate an electronic foam cutter for furniture foam cushion production.
• Must follow lead of senior shop personnel and adhere to shop policy, processes, procedures, criteria, and protocol.
• Must be able to accurately read measuring devices to include rulers and tape measures and have basic math skills.
• Capable and willing to work various shifts, extended hours, or weekends to fulfill the U.S. House of Representative's needs.
• Must be able to meet minimum physical requirements to include frequently lifting and moving 50 pounds (at a minimum), frequent standing, bending, crouching, lifting, twisting, and grasping.
• Upholster furniture using high-end upholstery techniques to include tying springs, covering furniture with provided covers, build-up of furniture from the frame up, hand sewing, pattern matching, etc.
• Safely operate an industrial sewing machine using leather, heavy fabric, and upholstery materials.
• Safely and properly remove covers from upholstered furniture in preparation for refurbishment.
• Clean and condition leather and fabric furniture to meet the standard.
• Operate furniture cleaning machines to meet the standards of the customer’s shop.
• Upholster intricate and challenging furniture with minimal supervision, employing proper upholstery techniques, including tufting and channeling.
• Cut and sew leather and heavy fabric with minimal waste, matching patterns for intricate and challenging upholstery covers.
• Other duties as assigned.
