Job Description

We have an opening for a Network Engineer. You will primarily work in a classified environment to support LLNL's diverse enterprise network architecture by helping design and operate IP/MPLS backbone networks, cloud connectivity, and services such as VPN, Internet edge, DNS, remote access, wireless, and security across both unclassified and classified environments. You will install, configure, and maintain network hardware and software in a highly technical environment similar to a major service provider, with exposure to modern networking, AI-assisted automation, and top vendors like Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Aruba, AWS, Azure, and GCP. This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division with the Computing Directorate, in support of LivIT and the Strategic Deterrence Group (SD).

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Collaborate on the design and architecture of campus, and datacenter networks utilizing advanced network technologies such as EVPN VXLAN, MPLS, and MVPN.
  • Perform network administration and troubleshooting tasks to configure, operate, and maintain network equipment including switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and other equipment.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security Team to implement comprehensive network security architectures, policies, and monitoring.
  • Engage with vendors to evaluate network products and services.
  • Work in a fast-paced and challenging environment, with multiple competing priorities, while managing to maintain sound judgement and excellent customer service.
  • Work within the unclassified environment inside ENS until a Q clearance is obtained.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry network architectures and best practices.
  • Perform occasional work outside normal business hours in order to provide support for network operations and maintenance activities.
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
  • Design and deliver advanced, customized networks, in alignment with customer requirements and enterprise network strategies.
  • Independently design, test, configure and effectively utilize network management and monitoring tools.
  • Diagnose, resolve, and document complex network problems.


Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • Broad experience in network system design, configuration, implementation, documentation, and operations.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience with network routing and switching, including OSPF, IS-IS, or BGP, and Spanning-tree.
  • Familiarity with common network automation frameworks such as Ansible and Python.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience in firewall configuration and maintenance, particularly Palo Alto NGFW.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of edge port security features, such as 802.1x.
  • Broad experience of F5 Load Balancers.
  • Proficient interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with customers and team members.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level
  • Significant experience developing advanced architecture solutions.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills and experience solving problems by analyzing protocol interactions collected in packet traces.
  • Experience training and mentoring team members in network engineering and architecture.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional Certifications (CCNP), or comparable industry certification from another vendor.
  • Experience with network overlay technologies such as GRE, IPSec, MPLS, and VXLAN.
  • F5, NetScaler or other load balancers and features.
  • Experience with SCADA or Industrial Controls networks.

Pay Range

Pay Range

$146,340 - $185,544 Annually for the SES.2 level
$175,530 - $222,564 Annually for the SES.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
