The Fleet Modernization Department (N231) is chartered to shape the future of naval warfare and maritime dominance, enabling maritime superiority and all-domain Fleet lethality in a dynamic, complex, and contested maritime environment.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Fleet Modernization Department at MITRE is seeking a Lead Software Engineer with experience in a broad range of engineering activities across the system life cycle (e.g., requirements engineering, systems architecture design, development, integration, testing, and validation). In this role, the applicant must lead software engineering activities that support rapid development and insertion of software enabled capabilities into an operational weapon system. Responsibilities include working directly with government sponsors and evaluating and implementing emerging processing and software technologies in the real-time embedded space. The ideal candidate should be adaptable and eager to broaden their knowledge, collaborating with others to identify and articulate local customer/sponsor challenges and contribute project definition and shaping within the Fleet Modernization Department Portfolio.

Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of relacted experience with a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, ore related field; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Proven record of successful development and execution of embedded software applications
- Experience with independent technical assessments of system-level software capabilities and solutions
- Experience with exploration and assessment of technical solutions through analysis, prototypes, and pilots
- Experience with researching emerging technologies
- Experience with translating mission drivers and priorities into software requirements and defining the solution trade space
- Demonstrated experience in full lifecycle and development of large software applications
- Understanding of industry standard software design patterns and best practices
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and collaborate as part of a software development team
- Active Top-Secret clearance; eligible for Special Access Program (SAP) access
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Degree in software engineering, computer science or related fields of study
- This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fifteen years of experience or 12 years with a master's degree
- Familiarity with P8-A missions systems software architecture.
- Experience with integrating external software libraries (SDKs) and managing dependencies.
- Experience with troubleshooting network-based applications deployed in large-scale distributed systems.
- Experience with analyzing technical issues to identify root causes and recommending or implementing fixes in a production environment.
- Experience with documenting technical processes, procedures, and API interfaces.
- Advanced understanding of computer hardware architecture and its effect on software design and performance
- Experience using Agile processes and tools
- Familiarity with Digital Signal Processing concepts and implementation
- Experience with Linux-based operating systems, e.g. Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Experience with Python, Java, and C++ programming languages.
- Experience with container engines, e.g. Podman, Apptainer.
