Duties

  • You will assist Nondestructive Test Examiners in conducting Nondestructive Tests and Inspections of a wide variety of structures and components.
  • You will assist in the operation of a wide variety of test equipment such as x-ray generators, pulse echo and resonance ultrasonic generators, magnetic field generators, radiacs, gamma ray isotope projectors, eddy current generators, etc.
  • You will assist in conducting Liquid Penetrant Inspections, Magnetic Particle Inspections, Radiographic Inspections, Eddy Current Inspection and Ultrasonic Inspections.
  • You will work under the direction of a Radiographer-in-Charge (RIC), establishing and guarding radiographic perimeters.
  • You will exercise judgement in the independent solution of minor problems encountered during performance of simple, routine work assignments.
  • You will know how to use the proper tools for specific use during completion of assigned tasks.
  • You will recognize and be able to select materials required to complete assigned tasks.
  • You will perform non-routine tasks associated with Nondestructive Testing when specific instructions are provided regarding required steps to follow for such work.
  • You will make judgments as to the proper sequence of steps while performing assigned non-routine work.
  • You will be responsible for the proper care and handling of the delicate equipment used in performing work of the Nondestructive Test Division.
  • You will be responsible for observing safety rules and regulations as they apply to working with electrical test equipment and industrial radiographic test equipment as well as those normally associated with Shipyard work.

  • You will be required to successfully complete training and obtain and maintain certification as a Radiographer's Assistant and for Radiological Control (Q).
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to work onboard ships and in small and/or confined spaces.
  • You will be required to be trustworthy and reliable.
  • This position requires rotating shift work and is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You must possess good vision, i.e. J1 or equivalent including the ability to distinguish between colors.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be physically capable of accomplishing the assigned work as the majority of the work involves walking, lifting, climbing, pushing, carrying, bending, and stooping.
  • You will be required to lift and/or carry loads/items up to 50 pounds in weight and occasionally lift and/or position some items weighing up to 100 pounds. (Assistance and lifting equipment will normally be available.)

Incumbents of this position may, as the workload and code 135 training budget allows, be given the opportunity to obtain certification in additional methods of Nondestructive Testing.

Upon successful completion of required work experience, training, and proficiency requirements, incumbent will be eligible for non-competitive promotion to WG-3705-07 in Code 135.

PPP applicants will be placed at the FPL, if determined Well Qualified (WQ). To receive priority consideration, the FPL must be the same grade level or equivalent of the retained grade or the grade held immediately prior to separation.
