Koniag Data Solutions, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Data Architect to support KDS and our government customer at the Pentagon, Arlington, VA.

The Data Architect will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data models, database structures, and data integration solutions that support enterprise-wide performance management and analytics capabilities. This position requires expertise in data architecture principles, federal data standards, and business intelligence technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Data Architecture and Design:
  • Design and develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support EPMS requirements and align with enterprise architecture standards
  • Create and maintain data dictionaries documenting data elements, attributes, relationships, and business rules
  • Develop database schemas, table structures, stored procedures, and views to support application functionality and reporting requirements
  • Design data integration solutions that consolidate information from multiple source systems into the EPMS data warehouse
  • Ensure data architecture designs support scalability, performance, and data quality requirements
  • Data Modeling and Database Development:
  • Utilize data modeling tools such as Erwin Data Modeler to create and maintain enterprise data models
  • Design and optimize SQL Server database structures to support high-performance queries and reporting
  • Develop and document data lineage, traceability, and metadata management processes
  • Create normalized and dimensional data models appropriate for transactional and analytical workloads
  • Design and implement slowly changing dimension strategies for historical data tracking

Business Intelligence and Analytics Support:
  • Design data structures that support Tableau, Power BI, and other business intelligence tools
  • Optimize database designs for dashboard performance and real-time analytics
  • Work with developers to integrate Tableau Server and Power BI reporting capabilities into the EPMS Dashboard
  • Support metrics processing and data analytics using DoD Advana platform
  • Develop data marts and analytical databases that support executive decision-making
  • Data Governance and Standards:
  • Establish and enforce data standards, naming conventions, and best practices across the EPMS environment
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define data ownership, stewardship, and governance policies
  • Ensure compliance with federal data standards and DoD data architecture frameworks
  • Document data quality rules and validation requirements
  • Support data classification and protection requirements according to security policies

System Integration and ETL:
  • Design Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes for data integration from source systems
  • Develop data mapping specifications between source systems and target data warehouse structures
  • Coordinate with application developers to ensure data architecture supports system functionality
  • Design and implement data validation and quality checking processes
  • Support daily data load file processing and troubleshooting

Documentation and Communication:
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation for data architecture, database designs, and data flows
  • Create data architecture diagrams and documentation for production implementation
  • Communicate data architecture concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Provide guidance to development teams on data access patterns and optimization techniques
  • Support change management through clear documentation of data structure modifications

Security and Compliance:
  • Design data security controls including role-based access, data encryption, and audit logging
  • Ensure data architecture complies with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)
  • Implement data protection measures for sensitive and classified information
  • Support CAC authentication integration for secure data access
  • Maintain compliance with federal data privacy and protection requirements

Performance Optimization:
  • Analyze database performance and recommend optimization strategies
  • Design and implement indexing strategies for improved query performance
  • Perform comparative analysis across development, test, and production database environments
  • Identify and resolve data-related performance bottlenecks
  • Monitor database growth and plan for capacity requirements

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or related field
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in data architecture and database design
  • Experience supporting federal government clients and understanding of federal data requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise data warehouse design and implementation

Technical Skills:
  • Expert-level proficiency with SQL Server database design, development, and administration
  • Strong experience with data modeling tools (Erwin Data Modeler or similar)
  • Proficiency with SQL development including complex queries, stored procedures, and performance optimization
  • Experience with business intelligence tools including Tableau and Power BI
  • Knowledge of ETL tools and data integration patterns
  • Familiarity with Oracle SQL Developer or similar database management tools
  • Understanding of dimensional modeling and data warehouse design principles
  • Experience with Python for data processing and automation

Federal Architecture Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF) data architecture principles
  • Understanding of DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) data models (DIV-1, DIV-2)
  • Familiarity with federal data standards and reference models
  • Knowledge of Evidence Act requirements for federal data management

Security and Compliance:
  • Understanding of Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) as they apply to databases
  • Knowledge of federal information security requirements and data protection standards
  • Experience implementing role-based access controls and data security measures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance

Soft Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical data architecture solutions
  • Experience working independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active Secret clearance
  • Experience with SharePoint data architecture and integration
  • Knowledge of DoD Advana platform for data analytics
  • Experience with Dev Express or similar application framework data integration
  • Certification in data management (CDMP) or database administration
  • Experience with agile development methodologies
  • Knowledge of Master Data Management principles and practices
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms (Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS)

Work Environment:
  • This position requires 3 days weekly on-site presence at WHS facilities
  • Remote work only available 2 days weekly
  • Standard business hours with occasional off-hours support for system deployments
  • Collaborative environment working closely with developers, analysts, and business stakeholders
