Description:Lockheed Martin (MFC) is seeking a Materials Engineering Intern to support the Orlando, FL site. The engineer will be working in the Applied Research optical-materials lab.
The internship offers a hands-on, immersive experience in a research environment where cutting-edge optical-device technologies are developed for aerospace and defense applications. The intern will work side-by-side with senior scientists and engineers, assisting with the micro- and nano-scale fabrication of optical components. In addition to fabrication work, the role involves extensive material-characterization activities that span optical, structural, and mechanical domains.
Typical tasks include measuring transmission and reflection spectra, performing Raman spectroscopy characterization, conducting scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for morphology and compositional analysis, and evaluating scattering behavior of the fabricated components.
Where needed, the intern will also participate in mechanical or environmental testing. Data gathered from these experiments will be meticulously recorded, processed, and visualized using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or excel, and the results will be communicated through clear technical reports and internal presentations.
The intern will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot fabrication challenges, refine test procedures, and ensure that all work adheres to Lockheed Martin's rigorous safety and data-integrity standards.
This experience provides valuable exposure to the full product-development lifecycle, from material selection and prototype fabrication to performance validation and documentation.
Basic Qualifications:
- Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Material science, Mechanical engineering, Optical Engineering,or related discipline, from an accredited university.
- Familiar with material science, specifically related to optical/infrared materials. This may include such as optical, structural, and mechanical properties.
Desired Skills:
- Micro/nano fabrication experience with emphasis on optical/infrared materials.
- Proficient in optical material characterization, to include but not limited to transmission, reflection, absorption, and refractive index characterization.
- Data analysis and summary using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, or related software.
- Experience working with MATLAB, Python, etc.
- Ability to learn lab tools, equipment, and techniques.
- Completed courses in material sciences and related introduction to mechanical engineering courses.
- Experience working in a materials lab and an overall interest in material sciences.
- Strong communication and organization skills.
Security Clearance Statement: This position requires a government security clearance, you must be a US Citizen for consideration.

Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed.
