Duties

Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of Air University Press, ensuring that publications and projects comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meets customer needs.

Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities as Director.

Formulate policies regarding customer personnel, develops department goals and directs implementation of these goals through subordinate managers/supervisors as well as develop, maintain and administer intermediate and long-range workload forecasts for AU Press publication processes.

Instructs management, faculty and other personnel from AU schools and academic agencies on planning and design of instructional and other writings for publication.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, GS-1082 series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-13, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes mastery of English grammar, writing, editing practices, style requirements as well as desktop publishing technology to draft, edit, design, and develop manuscripts into print-ready copy, as well as knowledge in word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, syllabication, grammar, abbreviation, punctuation, indexing, and format as needed to compose documents and to ensure continuity and lucidity of complex subject matter for formal publication. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in- grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-13 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-14 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Mastery of English grammar, writing, editing practices, style requirements as well as desktop publishing technology to draft, edit, design, and develop manuscripts into print-ready copy. Must include expertise in standard word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, syllabication, grammar, abbreviation, punctuation, indexing, and format as needed to compose documents and to ensure continuity and lucidity of complex subject matter for formal publication.
  • Professional knowledge of education theories, principles, procedures, and practices of secondary, adult, and continuing education as well as an understanding of guidance counseling methods/techniques to develop an accredited program.
  • Knowledge of military subject matter areas and related terminology such as airpower doctrine and strategy, national and military strategy and doctrine, military history and leadership, deployment of forces, logistics, weapons development and technology, international relations and current events as needed to understand projects and establish rapport with authors.
  • Extensive experience in developing long-term interpersonal relations with senior foreign and US leaders, and skill in developing and disseminating information about US DoD programs and activities aimed at enhancing understanding and knowledge of emerging air, space, and cyberspace developments. Incumbent uses diplomatic techniques, and military expertise to promote and carry out US national security strategy by engaging with key officials from other nations and throughout DoD and academia.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization through subordinate supervisors, while analyzing, planning, and adjusting work operations meet organization requirements and objectives within available resources.

  • PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
