Description & Requirements
Elder Research Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of MANTECH international Corporation seeks a motivated, career and customer-oriented Data Scientist to join our team in Lanham, MD. This is a hybrid position with 1-2 days onsite and 3-4 days remote.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- The Data Scientist leads the Data Analytics team and is responsible for coordinating and collaborating with other members of the team including data engineers, cyber analysts, software developers and solutions architects.
- Develops and presents analytic findings, initiatives, and schedules to stakeholders. They must possess significant experience in the Insider Threat domain, including familiarity with typical Insider Threat data sources, behavioral analytics, UEBA tools, fraud detection, and risk scoring models.
- Plays a central role in developing and operationalizing advanced analytics and machine learning models to identify subtle or evolving insider threats.
- Builds and trains predictive models to support behavior-based risk scoring, anomaly detection, and insider threat case prioritization.
- Validates models using operational data and collaborate closely with analysts and engineers to translate behavioral hypotheses into deployable, scalable algorithms that drive proactive threat detection within the Counter Insider Threat environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or related field with demonstrated experience.
- Years of experience: 6 12
- Experience clustering large amount of user-generated content and processing data in large-scale environments using platforms and services like Amazon EC2, Storm, Hadoop, Spark etc.
- Experience performing explanatory data analyses, generate and test working hypotheses, prepare and analyze historical data and identify patterns and correlations.
- Experience implementing User Behavior Analytics governance processes; specifically, the discipline to organize reporting, analytics and manipulate data to support analytical models and filters.
- Ability to articulate as well as support a visionary data analytics approach that will position the IRS to successfully deter, detect, and mitigate near and long-term cyber threats from a User Behavior Analytics perspective.
- Ability to perform machine learning, natural language, and statistical analysis methods, such as classification, collaborative filtering, association rules, topic modeling, time-series analysis, regression, statistical inference, and validation methods.
- Capability to analyze big data using sophisticated analytical and algorithmic techniques.
- Ability to communicate the correlation of vast stores of log data creatively and cogently into succinct presentation models for informed and decisive management action to deter, detect, and mitigate User Behavior Analytics risk.
- Ability to assist with client engagements focused on Big Data and Advanced Business Analytics, in diverse domains such as cyber security, fraud analytics, service development, public policy, optimization, risk management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or related field with demonstrated experience.
- Certification(s): CERT InT PgM (CERT Insider Threat Program Management) or CISSP.

Physical Requirements:
- The person in this position must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, or to communicate with co-workers, management, and customers, via email, phone, and or virtual communication, which may involve delivering presentations.
