Purpose and Impact: The NRL 5600 customer conducts research and technology development in the area of chemical threat detection and identification. By advancing the state-of-the-art in analytical chemistry, photonics, spectroscopy, and polymer chemistry, new scientific discoveries are transitioned to fieldable systems capable of detecting threats to the warfighter. This work is carried out with partners in academia, industry, and other defense and government agencies. Recent work is focused on the adaptation of spectroscopic analysis, such as Raman scattering and infrared absorption, to integrated photonic circuits and systems.
Work Schedule: 9-5
Essential Responsibilities: The primary role of a research chemist is to make new scientific discoveries and apply them for advanced device development and system integration to create new enabling technologies for the warfighter. This position requires the use and knowledge of
• Optics and photonics, including fiber optics and lasers
• Photonic integrated circuits, including waveguides
• Optical spectroscopy, including Raman scattering and infrared absorption
• Analytical chemistry
• Polymer chemistry
• Data analysis and processing
• Synthetic organic chemistry
• Nonlinear optics
This position requires skill in both oral and written communication, as well as the ability to learn new methods and techniques in a laboratory setting. A research chemist may be expected to travel, brief sponsors, author reports, and propose novel basic and applied research programs.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands: The work environment comprises both laboratory-based data acquisition and experimental design, and computer-based data analysis and reporting.
Minimum Requirements: Experience with lasers, spectroscopy, and optics; Experience with analytical chemistry; Basic computer programming (python or similar) and data analysis skills; Excellent communication skills; Comfort in a laboratory-based setting.
Clearance Required: Secret
Minimum Education: BS
Minimum Years of Experience: 0-2 (Would still like to review more senior candidates)
Required Certifications: (if needed) N/A
