HX5 is currently seeking a PCB Designer - NASA Avionics Systems to join the team with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The PCB Designer - NASA Avionics Systems will:
- Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager as part of group of over 45 Electronics and Electrical
Engineers and Designers. - Provide printed circuit board design support to various projects at NASA Johnson Space Center.
- Create multilayer PCB designs and layouts using Altium Designer.
- Work with Electrical Engineers to implement desired design packages.
- Work with Mechanical Engineers and Designers to implement desired packaging plans.
- Perform the implementation of analog, digital, high frequency, matched differential pairs, and high-power circuitry, utilizing
through hole and surface mount technologies. - Create Gerber data and package all files for fabrication.
- Create PCB footprints for the master library by interpreting manufacturer's data sheets.
- Document and archive schematic diagrams, PCB assembly drawings, PCB mechanical support drawings, and wiring
harness drawings. - Work with vendors to communicate and provide clarity during PCB fabrication.
- Perform other tasks assigned.
Education and Experience
- Typically requires a HS Diploma or its equivalent and 15 years of experience in the field or related area. May require
additional experience or education in one of the physical sciences directly applicable to the tasks performed - PCB Development and Design:
- Knowledge of IPC standards.
- In-depth experience, proficiency, and knowledge of Altium Designer.
- Extensive experience with component library management and creation.
- Experience with creating, updating and modifications of 3D component models.
- Familiar with both MIL-STD and commercial components.
- Proficient in high-density/high-speed design.
- Experience with low noise design and minimization of EMI/EMC.
- Highly accomplished experience with multi-layer PCB IPC Class 3 designs for space applications.
- Experience with DRCs and interfacing with manufacturing to produce designs that meet DFM guidelines.
PCB Designer to provide expertise in the following areas: - Create PCB footprints and symbols for component library by interpreting manufacturer's data sheets and engineering
parts request. - Drive and ensure ECAD standards are followed for components and projects.
- Ensure appropriate DRCs and DFM guidelines are followed.
- Provide PCB design support to various projects using Altium Designer.
- Work with Electrical Engineers to execute design packages.
- Work with Mechanical Engineers to ensure PCB form, fit, and function.
- Perform the implementation of analog, digital, high frequency, matched differential pairs, and high-power circuitry, utilizing through hole and surface mount technologies.
- Document and archive schematic diagrams, PCB assembly drawings, PCB mechanical support drawings, and wiring harness drawings
- Work with vendor manufacturers to communicate and provide clarity during PCB fabrication.
Preferences
- In-depth experience, proficiency, and knowledge of Altium Designer.
- Detailed knowledge of IPC standards (such as IPC-2222 and IPC-2221A)
- IPC CID Certification.
- Experience with other printed circuit board design packages such as PADS, Mentor Graphics, ORCAD Capture etc.
- Experience and knowledge with impedance control and matching, differential pairs, buried capacitance, EMI control, high frequency applications etc.
- Familiarity with NASA and or Military design/drawing standards.
- Working knowledge of high power applications and design for thermal management.
- Extensive experience with various form factors and specifications including but not limited to PCIe, PCI, VME etc.
- Experience with layout of multi-pin fine pitch and ball grid components.
- Working knowledge of the PCB fabrication and assembly processes.
- Knowledge and skill in drafting methods, procedures and techniques required.
- Must have the ability to produce drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5 using AutoCad and or Pro/E.
- Proficient in MS Office programs, particularly MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

This is a part-time position and offers a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off), when applicable.
Work Environment:
- Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
- Equipment and Machines - Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
Physical Requirements:
- Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time).
- May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
Other Position Requirements:
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
- Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and
adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
