Propulsion Systems is seeking a Research Scientist to join the Research & Development Analytical Laboratory team in Promontory, UT. The successful candidate will leverage strong research and problem-solving abilities within an R&D and production-support setting, with a primary focus on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this role you will develop, validate, and optimize HPLC methods to generate quantitative and qualitative data on raw materials, intermediates, and final products that support, among others, military, aerospace, environmental, and manufacturing applications. You will analyze data, interpret results, and translate findings into actionable recommendations for engineering and manufacturing groups. The position emphasizes knowledge-driven troubleshooting of analytical data throughout the material lifecycle, ensuring that all HPLC work meets rigorous quality and compliance standards.
This position will work on a 4/10 or 9/80 schedule, depending on preference.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop, validate, and optimize HPLC methods for raw materials, intermediates, and final products
• Perform routine analyses to support customers
• Provide analytical support for failure investigations and root-cause analyses, interpreting chromatographic results to guide engineering decisions
• Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses using HPLC with appropriate detection (UV-Vis, PDA, MS, etc.) and generate accurate data sets
• Create peer-reviewed data reports for customers in a timely manner
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and resolve method-performance issues

Basic Qualifications for Level 3:
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or other related field with 5 years of professional experience - OR - Master's degree in chemistry or other related field with 3 years of professional experience - OR - PhD with 1 year of professional experience.
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance
• Demonstrated knowledge of analytical laboratory techniques and procedures
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Basic Qualifications for Level 4:
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or other related field with 8 years of professional experience - OR - Master's degree in chemistry or other related field with 6 years of professional experience - OR - PhD with 4 years of professional experience.
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance
• Demonstrated knowledge of analytical laboratory techniques and procedures
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with LIMS systems
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with explosives
• Strong analytical thinking
• Three or more years of experience using HPLC and mass spectrometry
• Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field
• General knowledge of related disciplines
• Experience with additional analytical techniques is a plus
• Ability to communicate complex, abstract data to a wide range of audiences
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
