Basic Requirement for Nurse (GS-11):
(Mother/Infant Care)
Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Exam In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience: One full year (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level)which includes providing postpartum care to the mother, educating patients or staff, and assessing newborns. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

FOREIGN EDUCATION:: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Help
- Provides nursing care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period services with an emphasis on care and health. This care includes surgical conditions such as post-operative cesarean sections, vaginal repairs, tubal ligations.
- Responds decisively to changes in maternal/fetal/newborn conditions, providing immediate and appropriate measures according to Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Operates and monitors the performance of sophisticated equipment used in the care of complicated obstetrical patients, including, but not limited to EKG machines, infant resuscitation equipment, and infant warmers.
- Administers a wide variety of rapid-acting and highly potent medications (direct intravenous and other routes) according to specialty policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Utilizes a broad knowledge of drugs and intravenous therapy, including properties, indications, dosages, rates, and side effects.
- Plans, directs, and coordinates total patient care activities and foster multidisciplinary involvement by other intra and interdepartmental services.
- Functions as the primary liaison and advocate for patient and family using appropriate crisis intervention techniques.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain a current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia
- This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Pre-employment physical required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification required.
- Sugar Temperature Airway Blood pressure Lab Work and Emotional Support (STABLE) certification required.
- Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (IFHM) Course certification required.
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) certification required.
- Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.) unless exempted by a licensed physician.
- Employees whose primary clinical responsibilities involve caring for newborn infants, i.e., in critical care, specialty areas such as neonatal intensive care, labor and delivery trained in NRP and adhere to local policy.
- This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement.
